Ky may be William S. Herring of Rockingham Co., Virginia. This cannot be the case because William S. Herrin was the executor of his mother's, Elizabeth Stevenson Herring's, will in Rockingham Co., VA in 1820, and William Herrin was well settled in Pulaski County by 1800, he was bondsman of Sarah Herrin's and Benjamin Stogsdill's marriage on 20 Jun 1800. Therefore, I'll rule out any connection to the William S. Herrin of Rockingham Co. VA. Information on Willam S. Herrin was found in "Settlers by the Long Grey Trail" (Harrison, 1935). Further proof is that John Heron in the 1880 Pulaski Co., Ky Census lists his father from North Carolina and his mother from Tennessee. !VOCATION: Pulaski County, Ky Will Book 7ii page 934 Peter Ruark to Isaac Hayes Heirs, mentions the first 68 acre tract beginning at "where William Herrin's old shop stood." This tombstone, now partially destroyed, is located in the northeast corner of the inside wall of this church. The inscription indicates that the Reverend David Mossom is buried beneath the Church chancel. "The Reverend David Mossom lies nearby. He was an alumnus of the college of St. John, Cambridge. He was the rector of this parish for forty years. Of all the Presbyters of the Anglican Church he was the foremost among the American Presbyters. He was second to few in letters, who was overtaken by sadness and the decay of old age and the trials and tribulations which beset this life, he died and was buried near his wives Elizabeth and Mary, having while mindful of death in his days of health and vigor, elected and set this place of burial where may he find rest until resurrected to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Those survivors to whom he was well known testify to what he was, not this sepulchre stone. Born at London 25 March 1690 Died 4 January 1767." Documents Concerning Philip English. (From Massachusetts State Archives, vol. xi). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The petn to Hon. Lieut. Gov. Dummer of Mass. Bay, David Mossom Clerk, Minister of the Church of England in Marblehead in behalf of Philip English humbly showeth, That the said Philip English having as frequently as he could from the first erecting the church at Marblehead resorted to the Public Worship of God at the said Church of which sufficient prof has been made to me by the testimony of many Persons before I had the Charge of said Church and from my becoming Minister thereof for more than six years past, upon my own knowledge do declare that he the said Philip English has (during the sumer season especially) frequently come to church . . . . and the Reasons of his not coming so constantly as his Inclinations led him was the utter impossibility of getting over the ferry on the Lord's day, notwithstanding which he the said Philip English was three weeks since committed Prisoner to his Majtys Goal in Salem, and is to this day there closely confined for non payment of an assessment made for the support of the minister thereof, and of myself I would further observe to your honour that the Collectors having not exacted this Rate of him for five years past, no probable Reason can be assigned for their surceasing it but the assumption that he did belong to the Church at Marblehead, &c. &c. Boston, Feb. 11, 1724. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Rev. MOSSOM DAVID (I27003)

John was killed by Indians about 1790 and was buried at Fort Wear Cemetery. Margaret, his wife, moved to South Alabama. Many years later she returned to East Tennessee to visit her daughter, Col. Wear's widow. Within eight miles of her daughter's home, she became very ill and died. One of her last wishes was to be buried beside her husband in the Wear Cemetery. In the years since John Gilliland's death, there had been many burials in the cemetery and no one was alive who could recall which grave was his. Finally, Frank, the old slave who had accompanied the Wear family into the wilderness, and who had helped construct the fort and house, "bethought himself" of a large tree which stood near the John Gilliland grave. Thus Margaret Gilliland was laid to rest beside her husband afte r a lapse of many years. !TAX LIST: Lister, B & B (1973). "Index to Early Tennessee Tax Lists", page 75.
