| 507 | Chris Alfeldt was born in Germany and came to this county in his youth, settling in Washington County. Mr. Alfeldt was married to Hannah Luebke. They were the parents of one son, John R. Alfeldt. Mrs. Alfeldt died at an early age. Mr. Alfeldt died in 1923. Tehir son, John R. Alfeldt, was born on August 5, 1875. John married Helena Roethemeyer and they were the parents of three children - two daughters, Adella and Anna, and one son, Edward. They lived on a farm near Oakdale. His wife, Helena, was born May 29, 1878 and died October 1, 1928. John died April 12, 1966. Their son, Edward H., was born July 23, 1897 in Plum Hill Township. As a child he moved with his parents to Oakdale Township. Edward H. Alfeldt married Irene Frieman on October 20, 1931. Irene was born June 2, 1902 in Oakdale Township. She was the only daughter born to Henry and Waltena (Reuter) Frieman. For a number of years Edward operated a threshing rig and also a saw mill. At the time of his passing in 1943 he was Highway Commissioner for Oakdale Township. Edward and Irene were the parents of four sons, Enloe, Cecil, Verdell and Edward Harold. Enlow married Sandra Cantrill in the Greenville Baptist Church on february 4, 1967. They live in Oakdale. Enloe is employed in the maintenance department at Menard Prison. They have three sons, Jason, Timothy and Andrew. Cecil married Myrene Carson on July 8, 1972 in the Reformed Presbyterian Church at Oakdale and they live in Oakdale. They have one son, Gregory, and one daughter, Karen. Verdell married Patsy Sue Nickolson on August 31, 1963 in the First Baptist Church at Christopher. They live in Marissa. They have two sons, Jimmie and Danny. Cecil and Verdell are in partnership. They own and operate four coin-operated laundries and two car washes. they also operate a Christmas Tree Farm. Edward Harold married Ruth Clark March 31, 1962 in the Nine Mile Baptist Church at Tamaroa. They have two daughters, Sara and Debra, and live in East Peoria. | 545 | Christine was born on the Collmeyer farm between New Minden and Nashville and baptised by a Methodist minister in Nashville, as the Lutheran pastor was 25 miles away (probably in Venedy) and this was an emergency. Christine and Henry were married in St. John Lutheran Church in New Minden and then bought farmland in the Hoyleton area for $8.00 an acre. He was a charter member of the Hoyleton Lutheran Church and served as first deacon and janitor of that church. In 1917, when the church celebrated its 50th anniversary, he was one of 3 surviving charter members. He was 79 at the time of his death. Although Christine lived to be 83, she was totally blind the last 7 years of her life - said to be the result of unsuccessful cataract surgery. She was cared for by her youngest daughter, Lena (Carolina) who never married. | 548 | Clara attended the old "cow-bell" school and was only 14 when her mother had a stroke which paralyzed her and made her an invalid for the last 10 years of her life. Her father passed away 5 years before her mother of what was believed to be cancer. Clara continued to live in the home and help care for her mother till she died and then her brothers until they married or left home. She then held a position in the local post office and the year before her marriage went to Vandalia to live with her sister Ida and work in the Atkinson-Brink Store. | 549 | Clara lived at home and worked in the coat alteration dept. of Scruggs Vandervoort and Barney Dept. Store for 16 years. After her mother had a stroke, Clara quit and took care of her until she passed away. She and her father continued to live in the home and Clara did the same type of alteration work at Famous-Barr Co. She retired some years ago and after her father's death in 1944 continued to live in the family home until a few years ago when she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Home on South Broadway, St. Louis, Mo. She still maintains membership in the Evangelical Church which was originally located at 23rd and Washington and attends services and Ladies Aid meetings frequently. This church, Bethany United Church of Christ, has within the last two years united with Peace Church and is called Bethany-Peace United Church of Christ and is located at 11936 Bellefontaine Road. The following article appeared in a neighborhood newspaper in 1971: Symbol of Merger New Old Tones at Bethany-Peace Two old bells from Bethany United Church of Christ will provide new tones for the newly-merged congregation at bethany-Peace United Church of Christ, 11936 Bellefontaine Road. The Bells ahve hung in the tower of Bethany Church at Red Bud and Rosalie Aves. for 56 years and ahve now been moved to the new quarters. They are temporarily located on a platform at the right of the entrance of Peace Church. The merger was approved Feb. 22, 1970, and incorporated January 14, 1971. In 1879, the ladies society (Frauen Verein) donated the bells for the church at 23rd and Washington St. They are called Mary & Martha. Clara Hoffman a long time member at Bethany, provided funds for the moving of the bells. "The Bells at Bethany Church have been very dear to me, always," she says. "At the old church at 23rd & Washington the bells would ring every Sat. evening at 7:00 P.M. I can remember back as a child, my grandmother and I would walk up the block to the Church, she telling me the story of Mary and Martha living in the little town of Bethany. Living near the church most of my life and hearing the bells ring over the years, I enjoyed them and I hope and pray that Mary and Martha will continue to ring many more years for others to enjoy." A tower for the bells is to be built as soon as funds can be obtained. The membership of the new congregation is 1000.
