John Gilliland was a member of the first Grand Jury of Jefferson County, Tennessee in 1792. All the Grand Jury Members had historical significance in the founding of Tennessee. page 159. John Gilliland an Early Settler in Cocke County John Gilliland was one of the early settlers near the mouth of Big Pigeon was John Gilliland, who made a crop of corn on his land in 1783, and a year or two later brought his large family to the place, where he continued to live until the time of his death about 1788-9. He left a large family of children, including eight who were sons. He took an active part in the organization of the State of Franklin and was a member of the convention of 1785 who wrote the Constitution of the new State. John Gilliland donated fifty acres of land for the first county seat of Cocke County. It was called Newport. Joseph Hamilton one of the excutors was qualified. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- source b): Fort Wear Cemetery - John Gilliland (no dates) Margaret Gilliland died 1820 (From "The Reminescences and Autobiography of John Wilkinson"): John and Margaret Gilliland were the parents of Samuel Wear's second wife. John was killed by Indians about 1790 and was buried at Fort Wear Cemetery. Margaret, his wife, moved to South Alabama. Many years later she returned to East Tennessee to visit her daughter, Col. Wear's widow. Within eight miles of her daughter's home, she became very ill and died. One of her last wishes was to be buried beside her husband in the Wear Cemetery. In the years since John Gilliland's death, there had been many burials in the cemetery and no one was alive who could recall which grave was his. Finally, Frank, the old slave who had accompanied the Wear family into the wilderness, and who had helped construct the fort and house, "bethought himself" of a large tree which stood near the John Gilliland grave. When on his from his house in Penn. to reach his daughter in Frederic Co Md he rode into a mill pond to water his horse (a ????? year old it is Md). In some way he fell from his horse and was drowned in shallow water. When found his horse was standing by him. He still holding the reins in his hand. In his pocket he carried a large silver watch which, tradition informs us, was still running when the body was removed from the water. The watch is now owned by his great, great grandson, James C. Taylor Uniontown Tennessee. The only people of this name appearing in the 1800 Maryland Census are Margaret Gillalan [p. 163] & Hestor Gillerlin [p. 180], both residing in Frederick Co., but no John. There is little doubt that Hestor was the widow of John Gilliland (1706-1790), who resided in Chester Co., Pa., at least as early as 1765 and probably died in Frederick Co., Md. We know that John died on the way from Chester Co., Md to his daughter's in Frederick Co., Md, but we don't know exactly where (my note, L. Herrin; see notes for John Gilliland). |

| 3733 | I30718 | Per Larry Herrin: !LINEAGE: A family record sheet was sent to Elston Herrin from Emma Barrett Reeves of Nacogdoches, TX showing Joseph born in 1786 and with children John, Bathsheba (or Bashaba), Sarah, Martha and Phoebe. This coincides well with the family of 12 for which Pulaski Co., KY birth records were found. Christian Jackson lists Joseph Jackson in her will as her grandchild without specifying whose child he is. However, Mrs. Reeves points out that it is probably Samuel, Jr. or Elijah. There is an Elijah who settled in Hopkins Co., KY. There is a Samuel shown in Fayette Co., VA in 1787, which was later to become part of Kentucky. This Joseph Jackson apparently had a brother named John Jackson, living with him in Pulaski Co. Temporarily, or until proven, I am going to assume that Joseph Jackson's father was Samuel Jackson, Jr. and try to procure the documentation. !MARRIAGE: 1988 Mormon IGI Records for North Carolina show a Joseph Jackson married Margaret Miller 02 JUN 1819 in Guilford County. The dates are impossible, but close. I need to check the original records to see if this possibility is a fact. (page 6750); Batch MS16022 Ser. Sht. 2190. !CENSUS: Pulaski Co., Ky 1870 Census Joseph Jackson was 83 and living with James and Phoebe Burdine in the Pulaski Co. KY 1870 Census. !MILITARY: From Tombstone located in Pulaski Co., KY (photo on file L. Herrin) Joseph Jackson was in Co. H. 32nd. Inf. Div. Corp. in the War of 1812. !BURIAL: This is on his tombstone which is located in Whitaker Cemetery in Burdine Valley, Pulaski Co., KY on old Highway 80. His stone, along with his son's is located against the west fence near the center of the cemetery. A picture is on file (l. Herrin) of both tombstones, and a picture of the cemetery. Lincoln Co. Will Records (Lincoln Co. in 1799 included Pulaski Co.) has a copy of Joseph Jackson's will in Will Book #1 Pages 207-210, recorded 14 NOV 1797. This is probably the Joseph Jackson who died at Boone's Fort, however. I have a copy of the posessions sent to me through Stanford Court Clerk. Since Joseph Jackson would have only been 11 years old 1n 1797, this will is obviously not his. Pulaski Co. This Joseph Jackson is assumed to be the Joseph Jackson of Moore Co., NC since the birth dates coincide. |
