Immigration 1911; came to the USA in/around 1916 from Denmark to New York and then to Chicago. Changed the spelling of last name when he came to US from Sorensen to Sorensen and Soren to Samuel. Naturalization April 28, 1921, # 1474580, Petition Volume 137A, #37711. Worked for Edison Commonwealth in Chicago, Illinois. Address in 1921: 2653 Coyne St., Chicago, Illinois. |
| 2952 | I21603 | Per information from David A. Stapp. He was christened at home on September 20, 1859 and then in church on October 23, 1859. His mother's cleansing was October 23, 1859. His godparents were Niels Jacobsen's daugher, Johanne Nielsen and Niels Jensen's daughter Johanne Nielsen and fisherman Peder Christensen, Bachelor and fisherman Soren Madsen all from Ron and Bachelor Joseph Willadsen of Osteragger. Gravesite: He is buried next to his wife, Ane Sorensen, in Lyngby. Both tombstones no longer exist due to expansion needs plus the tombstones got old and worn. There is a story told about Niels that he and two other fishers were in a storm the two others were scared to death. Niels told them that if God wanted to take him that there was nothing he could do, so he laid down in the middle of the boat and fell asleep. Niels was a very strict Christian, believed to be Lutheran. The house that Niels and his wife lived in still exists today. It is a summer residence. He and his wife left Agger, Denmark because of flooding to their house. Many of the people of Agger moved to Lyngby. Niels came to America in/around 1932 at the age of 70 to visit his two sons, Soren and Christian, who lived in Chicago. |

| 2956 | I2163 | By the process of elimination, it would appear that the father of Washington Grove who was born in IL in 1821 (according to his census records) is Daniel Grove. He is the only Grove living in Lawrence Co, IL from 1816 on. There is one other Grove in the area (Michael) who is possibly the son of Daniel. Michael married Rebecca McCleave in 1926 in Lawrence County, Il and then moved away. Daniel Grove came to Lawrence Co, IL from PA in 1816, he had three children at the time: Michael, John and Elizabeth. Washington was born in IL. From: History of Edwards, Lawrence and Wabash Counties, Illinois: It can probably be safely assumed that Daniel Grove is from the Groff family that came from Switzerland due to religious persecution and settled in Lancaster Co, PA in the early 1700s. The Groffs and Landis families, and others, were Anabaptists in Switzerland and were forced to flee to Germany to survive. Many of these families chose to come to PA when William Penn opened it up to all religious groups. Daniel served on the first grand jury appointed in the county in Sept. 1825. Daniel is found on the 1840 census records in Lawrence County, IL. He is listed as having 4 sons, one under 20 (Washington) and three between 20-30. There are 2 daughters, one under 20 and one between 20 and 30 (Elisabeth). Daniel's wife is still alive, between the ages of 60 and 70. They are living next to the McCleaves, the family that their possible son Michael married into. Daniel is found on the 1830 census records in Lawrence Co, IL. He is listed as being between 50 and 60, with 4 sons, 2 between 5 and 10, one between 10 and 15, and one between 15 and 10. There are 3 daughters, between 5 and 20, and his wife. Daniel is found on the 1820 census records for Edwards Co, IL (Lawrence Co broke away from Edwards Co.) He is listed as having 3 sons, 2 under 10 and one between 10-16, Daniel is listed as over 45 which means he was born before 1775. There are 2 daughters, both under 10 and Daniel's wife who is between 26-45. |

We do not have many records on this family, except that they were the grandparents of Lawrence Johnson, 244 Pollard St., Batesville, Ms. Harold McMinn married second Julia Ann McCullar. |
