    OBITUARY OF J. W. GINES

We are taught in the work of God that man was created a little lower than the angels. Whatever this may mean to us, we are sure that the Marvelous Cabinet consisting of reason, Will, and Conscience, are God-given powers and by these man is distinguished from the beasts sof the field with capacity for higher rational life and Spiritual insight.

To this truth John Wesley Gines was awakened years ago by the birth of a moral personality.

In Bible terms we wold say he was "born again" or truly converted to Jesus, and later saw the consistency of the teaching of God's word relation to the doctrine of heart holiness, and our ransom powers being fully dedicated to God.

This was the experience that gave this good man a never dying zeal and fervor for the salvation of men and the prosperity of the cause of Christ.

It was the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that pressed the matter of a place of worship upon the heart of Bro. Gines while living near Taswell Crawford County Indiana.

There was no finance and not many people interested but despite the prevailing indifference and unfavorable surroundings - his faith touoched the God of Miracles and the church was erected. Grand revivals followed and many who were converted to Christunder the labors of John Gines have long since gone to their heavenly reward.

It was almost 26 years ago since Bro. Gines located in Daviess County North of Washington. Again the revival fire was kindled in his heart and plans were set in operation for an ingathering of Souls.

As a result of this inspiration more than one hundred and fifty people were converted to Christ in the old theater building on West VanTrees St. and a Free Methodist Church organized with forty-four Charter members.

Later followed the erection of the building, we worship in today. Bro. Gines has served the Church through all the reverses and problems that are common to those who carry responsibility in religious activities. Many times has he been elected as delegate to the Annual Conference of his Church. Also served as Local Preacher, Class Leader and Chairman of various committees. Yet with an humble attitude and congenial Spirit he won the hearts and love of many people in and outside of Church circles.

We would not forget while we mention the many virtues of this good man that a consecrated devoted mother in Israel shared her life in all the efforts which were crowned with success. Ida M. Burget to whom he was married November 24, 1887. Never failed to play the part of a faithful wife and an affectionate mother. For 53 years they have journeyed together and reared a family of six children. One having died at an early age.

Living are Rolla H. Gines, Washington, Indiana; Ray I. Gines, Bloomington, Indiana; Oral N. Gines, Washington, Indiana; Isis M. Hoss, Washington, Indiana; Dorothy B.Riggs, Bloomington, Indiana; and Herald M.Gines, Washington, Indiana beside 23 grand children and 3 great grand children.

Well done thou good and faithful servant, are the words of our dear Lord. Your toils have won for you a crown, up here is your reward.

What glorious things you shall behold. Eye hath not seen nor hath ear heard. But mansions fair so we are told, are for the saints so says the Lord.

Note on back of sales slip carried in his billfold.
Just one year ago today the dearest flower on earth to me was taken away to be with God who gave her to me for awhile and in our ups and downs and our trials we shared such (maybe it's each) other love we had our heart aches and so on but through God there is some day we may join hands again around God's white throng.

    CONSUMPTION CLAIMS PROMINENT YOUNG MAN
John Landis is dead after an illness lasting for only a few week. Many attend funeral.

John G. Landis, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Landis, passed away at their home just east of the city Saturday morning. The remains were laid to rest in Good Will Cemetery Monday afternoon after funeral services at the Landis residence conducted by the Rev. G. Halleck Rowe, of Shoals.
John's health began failing only a few months ago after a severe attach of la grippe and when told by a local physician that he had tuberculosis he immediately left for Colorado Springs and entered the Modern Woodmen sanitarium in the expectation of regaining his usual robust health. He had been there but a short time when word was sent back by the physician in charge that nothing could be done for him and so in a few days more he was sent back home where he lived but three weeks more.
Mr. Landis was only twenty-four years of age. He was born in Sumner, Illinois, but came to Loogootee with his parents at the age of only eight and has resided here since. Besides his parents he leaves two sisters; Mrs. A. T. Long, of Indianapolis, and Jessie, who is at home.
For a number of years John had been an employee of the Southern Indiana Glass Works. He was a valued member of the factory's base ball team and was highly respected by both employers and associates. The factory employees and the ball club members attended the funeral in a body.
The funeral services at the cemetery were in charge of the Modern Woodmen lodge of which John was a member and in which he carried one thousand dollars of life insurance.
He was a well known young man and was liked by all who knew him. His premature death is a very great regret to a large circle of friends.

    RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT

To the officers and members of Loogootee Camp No. 8,730 Modern Woodmen of America.
Whereas, The Supreme Giver of Life in his infinite wisdom has called from our camp fires, from the midst of his friends and from the bosom of his family our beloved brother, John G. Landis, be it therefore resolved:
That our camp acknowledges the loss of a faithful neighbor in Woodcraft, and a worthy associate.
That we offer our condolences to the grief stricken family and point them in their sorrow to the All-wise ruler of the universe who in His inexplainable wisdom doeth all things well.
That our charter be draped in mourning for a period of thirty days.

Newspaper article from Valley Advance, Vol. 2, No. 26, Vincennes, IN, March 3, 1966.

WASHINGTON MAN NOTES 50TH YEAR AS GROCER by Larry Rodimel and David Snow

Mr. Rolla H. Gines, Washington, IN grocer, this year observes his 50th year in the neighborhood grocery business.
Mr. Gines is 77 years old and a native of Illinois. He was first introduced to the grocery business at a store established by his father in Vincennes at Second and Lyndale streets.
He told The Valley Advance that his basic knowledge of the grocery business came from those 10 years with his father.
In 1916, Mr. Gines and his brother, Oral, ventured forth in the business world with an establishment of their own at 400 West Main Street in Washington. They had only 500 dollars in cash and a 40-acre farm, given to them by their father, with which to begin their business.
After three successful years, they moved to a larger store at 1415 McCormick Avenue. It wasn't until 1926 that Mr. Gines began business for himself at 1015 West Walnut Street. Gines' Grocery has remained at this location for the past 40 years. (Oral returned to the farm at that time. He died in 1962.)
Changes have crept gradually into the grocery business over the years, Mr. Gines said. Once, a man's word was all that was needed for credit purchasing; today, however, the businessman has to check with a clearinghouse (credit bureau) for each new person's credit rating, he noted. Also, at one time, sugar and beans were stored in large barrels from which the grocer would dip the desired amount for each customer. "Now, these and other items are packaged in small individual containers for convenience," Gines mused. "Coffee was once ground fresh by the grocer; it is pre-ground or 'instant' today," he added.
Mr. Gines also remembers the days of horse and wagon delivery and fears, likewise, that the time of the small neighborhood grocery is limited due to what he called the "overwhelming success of super markets."
The major local change Mr. Gines witnessed, however, was the loss of his neighborhood customers because of the move...section by section over the years...of the B. & O. Railroad shops, the major employer of the area...Washington's West End. Diesels meant the erosion of the shops' usefulness. And that usefulness was once of major significance what with the shops equidistant from Cincinnati, Ohio and St. Louis, MO.
When asked what he would do if he had a chance to repeat his career, Mr. Gines replied that "it was by chance that I became involved in the grocery business, but I am thankful that I did have such an opportunity,."
He also said that he has considered retirement many times since he reached the age of 65, 12 years ago. "In fact," he said "I might retire any day."
The impression gained by The Valley Advance is that he loves the business too much to leave it.

There are two pictures along with the article.
    (1) Taken inside the store: Mr. Gines gazes pensively out his store front as he recalls highlights of his 50 years as a grocer. He was interviewed and photographed by VU Journalism students on assignment with theValley Advance last week.
    (2) This is the Gines' grocery located on the corner of West Walnut and 11th streets in Washington. A striking building in its day it still reflects a friendly atmosphere of the neighborhood grocery store of days gone by. (Valley Advance Photo)

OPERATION FAILS TO SAVE LIFE OF CHARLES BURRIS, 10
Boy whose leg was fractured in auto acciident dies at the hospital.

Suffering an irreducible fracture of the groin line of the femur the night of January 8 when he was struck by an automobile while on the way to a motion picture show, Charles Burris, the ten-year-old son of Dave Burris, 400 northwest 10th street, died at the county hospital at 6 o'clock this morning.
The fracture not being susceptible to the ordinary methods of reduction, an operation was performed at the hospital Sunday morning to provide relief. The patient never rallied, his condition growing steadily worse. Attending physicians said the complications which caused the lad's death were general blood poisoning and emboli of the lungs.
The car which struck the youth was a Willys-Knight belonging to Rol Gines but it was being driven by his brother, Oral, at the time of the accident. The motor car was traveling west in Walnut and the accident happened between the intersection of Ogdon and Front Streets.
Witnesses said the Burris boy with a companion, stepped from the curb line into the street directly in the path of the machine which is said to have been traveling at a slow rate of speed. The bumper struck Burris, knocking him to the pavement, but his companion escaped injury, the car failing to hit him. The burris boy is said to have been lying on a line with the rear door of the automobile when it was brought to a stop.
Dr. R. S. Wood, county coroner, viewed the body at the Keller and Williams undertaking parlors but said he would hold no inquest unless an investigation was requested by either Gines or the dead boy's father, he being satisfied death resulted from surgical shock. The coroner added that what he had learned of the circumstances surrounding the infliction of the injury in an unofficial way he also is convinced that the accident was wholly unavoidable.
The dead boy was, a student at the West End School building. His mother has been dead some years, but he is survived by his father and a sister, Loretta. The sister is making her home with an aunt, Mrs. Carl Williams, at Sikeston, Missouri.
The body was removed to the home of Mrs. Frank Crabb, Jefferson Street today. While not definitely arranged, the funeral services probably will be Thursday morning with burial in Oak Grove cemetery.

Thus have many persons described what happens during the near-death experience. They tell of a sense of floating, a feeling of release of all pain, a great white light, and some even extend their experiences into five stages.
Edwin Gines of Washington knows first hand of earlier phases of the experiences which researchers have found common in hundreds of individuals who have approached a "clinical" death.
Dr. Kenneth Ring, a professor of psychology at the University of Connecticut, from interviews with 102 men and women, has concluded that the near-death phenomenon is, indeed, a new stage of growth, a spiritual rebirth that permits an individual a new zest and appreciation of life. Gines and his wife Fern will attest to that theory.
Gines' experience began Dec. 19, 1978 and in succeeding weeks he was to undergo not only the near-death moments but other traumatic conditions which were partially concealed from him by his family until after he was recovering from open heart surgery.
On a visit in San Diego, the Gines' daughter, Gaetana Kratzer, convinced her father he did not appear well and insisted he enter Mercy Hospital and Medical Center for tests. These tests determined that while he had experienced no pain, he had in fact suffered a serious heart attack.
On December 29 Ed was feeling great, preparing to leave the hospital, when suddenly severe pain hit his chest and arm. He reached for the call button and remembered hearing the nurse answer immediately.
It later developed the instant response by the nurse and the fortuitous proximity fo two doctors (who were planning to visit Gines before his dismissal) saved his life. Within a short time he had electric shock...back to life.
"I had a feeling of floating higher and higher," Gines recalls. "It was beautiful and the most peaceful situation you could imagine. I was so happy and peaceful.
When the electric shock treatment took effect, I kept asing the doctors...why?...why? They wanted to know what I meant. My answer was: Why did you bring me back? I was feeling so good, so peaceful, and now I'm back and feeling all this pain."
If one is to follow documented cases (i.e. Kubler-Ross On Dearh and Dying) Gines was through the first stages - a feeling of incredible peacefulness, something which has no equal; then the feeling of detachment, of floating out-of-the-body.
Some accounts have told of being like a spectator, watching nurses and doctors working over their bodies, as if from a balcony looking down,
Gines' experience was abruptly terminated by the electric shock treatment.

Other stages, described by some persons but not by Gines, include the peaceful movement into a tunnel-like opening; then a brilliant gold-yellow light, very warm but never hurtful to the eyes; and finally a distinct calling, not necessarily a voice, in which one is told "Your life is not finished...go back."
Linked with the distinct impressions of the rising higher and higher was the appearance when he regained consciousness of the the hospital chaplain, Sister Mary La Salellette, of the Sisters of Mercy, whose kindly face, enshrouded in white, became Ed's"guardian angel" from there on.
Two more heart attacks the same day kept Ed in the hospital's intensive care for 26 days, then he was released to be prepared for open heart surgery.
The family kept from him many of the details of a shooting at a school where his daughter Gaetana, a speech therapist, was teaching. A teen-ager killed the school principal and custodian, and wounded eight children. Ed did not know for weeks Gaetana had gone from her room to drag inside an injured child, and then huddled over the child in life-saving efforts. Later the door through which she had exited was found riddled with bullets.
Finally, after he was recovering from surgery, he had to return home early because of the death of his father.
The religious aspects of near-death experiences are also being examined by scholars who say one's own religious beliefs affect their interpretation of the near-death moments.
"It is a faith-strengthening thing. Certainly we do not want to die, but we do not fear death," Ed and Fern say.
This is the conclusion of many whom scholars have interviewed: They say what they have experienced will come again and their time has simply been postponed.
Researchers are looking into all facets, such as could these stories have been induced by anesthesia, but as in Gines case, anesthesia sometimes has not been used at the time of the experience. Ed and Fern have recalled their own experiences with anesthesia and Ed says the sensation is not the same as the experience in San Diego.

There is a picture of Ed and Fern Gines sitting on a couch sharing a newspaper. The caption reads: Ed and Fern Gines read a newspaper account of a shooting in a San Diego school where their daughter was teaching. Ed was in a San Diego hospital at the time and almost died of a heart attach, experiencing the first stage of "life after death."
