Burned to death when her clothing caught on fire when she sat on a stove to remove her boots. According to Rosa Schmidt Hull, Mollie had sat down on the kitchen stove to put on her stockings and shoes, and her gown caught fire, burning her to death. According to her obituary, Mary had just gone out to the well to get a bucket of water, and the well was a distance from the house. The child was playing with her sister and came frunning from the house engulfed in flames. Mary tried to put the fire out by wrapping her in a blanket, but the fire had already done its worst, and the child died several hours later. Mary was so badly burned on the hands and arms that she was unable to attend Mollie's funeral.
