    Notes:

    Dr. Edward Bernreuter, a brother of George and Louis Bernreuter, was a son of Dr. Conrad Bernreuter of Nashville, IL.
    Edward was born in 1859, died in 1905 in Mt. Olive, Il., where he practiced medicine and surgery. He had his medical and musical education in Germany - (he was an accomplished pianist). He continued medicine in Vienna as an observer and student of surgery which was then in its infancy.
    Through the influence of an Aunt who lived in Mt. Olive, Il., he opened his offices in that city. Since this was a coal mining area he felt he could successfully pursue his surgical knowledge there because of the number of accidents in the coal mine during that period. He became well-known for his success in orthopedic surgery, but died in his prime, aged forty-five.
    He married Lydia Nieman of Mt. Olive. Several of their children died in infancy. Those who grew to maturity were Walter, Corinne, Alfred, Winona, and Herbert.
    Walter, the eldest was a graduate electrical engineer, University of Illinois, 1901. He never married.
    Corinne, a graduate of Strasburg Conservatory in St. Louis, married but had no children.
    Alfred was first violinist with the St. Louis Symphony during most of his productive years. Later he taught music at Greenville, Il. College. He also married but had no children.
    Winona died at twenty-five.
    Herbert was born September 1900 and died in 1954. He, too, was a graduate engineer, and had an inventive turn of mind, having invented a bomb sight which the government purchased and used throughout WJ.W.II. He married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth von-Einem by whom he had two daughters. Betty Jean (b. 8-22-27) married Thos. Nielson on 8-22-47. They have two sons: Thomas, b. 1-27-51, is a Congregational minister in Illinois, and Kurt, who is a radio announcer in Iowa. Betty Jean lives in Franklin Park, IL. Their second daughter is Joann b. 10-5-29. She married Harry Caldwell on 1-22-49. they have four children: Craig b. 1950, Brad b. 1952, Joy b. 1954, Barry, b. 1957. Joann lives in Decatur, Illinois.
    Herbert's second wife is Claire Tonnies of Albers, IL who now lives in Tucson, Arizona. Clair is the mother of Deborah b. 12-13-51, now a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

    Notes:

    George Bernreuter was the middle son among three brothers, who with six sisters were born in the vicinity of Nashville during the Civil War period. their parents were Dr. Conrad Bernreuter and Catherine Stullken.
    All three of the brothers became highly educated: Edward, the oldest, in medicine, George in theology, and Louis in law.
    George was born in Nashville on october 20, 1860. He graduated from Central Wesleyan College, Warrenton, MO. and then from McKendree College at Lebanon, Il. in 1888. He then attended Boston University School of Theology, graduating in 1892. While there, he preached at a church in Osterville, Mass. on Cape Cod. He had previously preached during his college years at Humboldt, Neb. in both Enjglish and German. He knew seven languages and was also a poet and hymn writer. He was a professor of ancient languages at Spokane College, Washington at one time.
    After leaving Boston, he returned to Illinois and joined the Rock River Conference of the Methodist Church. His final church was at Tampico, Il. where he died on April 19, 1904. A large stained glass window was placed in the Tampico church in his memory by his devoted parishoners.
    While serving at Rockford, Il. he married Edith Wynne Gibbon, a member of the church choir, who was born in Stockton-on Tees, England on July 15, 1875. She died on April 1, 1964 in Washington, D.C. and is buried next to her husband in Nashville, IL.
    They had two children, Getrude Etelka, bornb January 16, 1896, and Robert Gibbon, born December 9, 1901. Gertrude graduated from Northwestern University and did graduate work at University of California. She taught Latin and Music in high school before her marriage in 1922 to Howard Hosmer of Nashville. She became a registered parliamentarian, is active in church and club work, and in 1966 was listed in Who's Who of American Women.
    Gertrude and Howard Hosmer have three children. Mary Edith, born September 3, 1925, Helen born April 16, 1929, and Howard, Jr. born June 27, 1932. Mary Edith and Helen graduated from Northwestern University. Howard, Jr. from Penn State University and George Washington School of Law.
    Mary Edith married Gordon Gilbertson of Salem, Oregon in 1947. Their children are Douglas born August 11, 1948, Meredith, born September 28, 1951, and Grant Hosmer, born April 20, 1954. Paul Douglas married Hope Campbell. they have one son, Brockman Hosmer, born December 5, 1975. Meredith married Dwight Clark Smith on May 19, 1979
    Helen Hosmer married Robert Arnold Dentler, a sociologist who became Dean of the School of Education at Boston University. Their oldest child was born October 31, 1952. She graduated from Boston University in 1974 and from the Law School of the University of California at Los Angeles in 1979, with honors. She married Garrett Stewart, an English professor and writer at University of California at Santa Barbara. Eric Arnold was born August 6, 1955. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Hotel Administration. Robin Howard was born April 13, 1960 and attends Middlesex College at Bedford, Mass.
    Howard Jr. served in the army in England from 1954 to 1957. He married Dorothy Addison who was born in Liverpool, England. Their children are Dianne Louise, born February 8, 1958, Philip Howard born July 30, 1962, and David Addison born August 19, 1967.
    The younger child of George and Edith Bernreuter is Robert Gibbon. He graduated from the College of the Pacific and then earned a degree in Psychology from Stanford University. He taught psychology at Penn. State University, then served as Dean of Admissions, as Registrar and as Vice-President for student affairs. He constructed a personality test, the Personality Inventory, that was widely used and was translated into most major languages.
    Robert married Shirley Trimble Buell, born August 5, 1909. She is a professional artist, who works mainly in pastel. they adopted a child Betty Jane Teeter, born September 22, 1940. Betty Jane married Karl Purnell by whom she had three children. Alexandra Spottswood, born September 14, 1968; Christopher Saxten, born August 14, 1969 and Justin Montcalm, born May 18, 1970. After a divorce from Karl Purnell in 1974 she married in 1975 Carl Paulin Zietlow, born April 14, 1931. They have one child, David Robert Gibbon, born September 28, 1976.

    Notes:

    Louis Bernreuter, son of Dr. Conrad Bernreuter (*) was born in St. Charles, MO on April 11th, 1863 where his parents had fled during the Civil War to escape harassment by local Southern Sympathizers. At the close of the war the family returned to Nashville, Illinois.
    Louis was the youngest of three sons and began his career as a school teacher in the Nashville High School. In 1892 he married Minna Krughoff, of Hoyleton Township, who was the daughter of Fred Krughoff and his wife Wilhelmina, nee Peithman.
    As a young teenager he drove for his father on medical calls, which at this time were made by horse and buggy, and often assisted him in amputations which in those days was about the limit of surgery. At this time he became interested in Art and went to classes via the L. & N. and Illinois Central trains to the Irvington Community where a colony of New Englanders had settled bringing some of their culture and talent with them.
    Louis was a avid reader and student and began his Law studies by reading in the Law Office of Charles T. Moore and by attending Apellate Court Sessions in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He passed the Illinois State Bar examinations in 1894. He ran for County Judge on the Republican ticket and was elected in 1903, serving one and half terms before he ran for Circuit Judge of the 3rd Judicial District of Illinois in 1909. He held this office four successive terms, totaling 24 years. The 3rd Judicial District consisted of Seven Counties as follows: Madison, Bond, St. Clair, Washington, Perry, Monroe and Randolph (**). As a judge he was always tolerant and patient with young inexperienced lawyers in his court, who in later years referred to him affectionately as "Unle Louis". It should be mentioned also that he was a man of high integrity and fairness to the guilty as well as the non-guilty. After retirement in 1933, at age 70, he returned to a leisurely Law practice and died in 1943.
    Judge Bernreuter and his wife Minna were the parents of two children. Ruth born in 1896 and Edward Louis born in 1906. Ruth the writer of this sketch married James Albert Watts, Jr. of Nashville in 1922 in New York City. He was the son of J. A. Watts, Sr. an Attorney of Nashville. They were the parents of three children, David, James and Joan.
    David, who lives in Nashville, was born in 1923, and operates a Mimeographing Service.
    James, known as "Bud" was born in 1925, who is a farmer and Land Manager also lives in Nashville. He married Imogene Decker in 1948 after being discharged from the Submarine service after World War II. They have three sons, Bill, Tom, and Eric. Bill married Pamela Boone of Mt. Vernon, Il. in 1978 and they have one daughter, Beth Melinda, born in 1979, also two sons, Blaine and Mickey Middleton, sons of Pamela by a former marriage. Bill's field is in construction.
    Thomas, Bud's second son, married Katherine Alonzo of St. Louis, MO in 1973. Their First child Brian, was born in 1975 and died in infancy the same year. Two more sons, Christopher and Steven were born in 1976 and 1979 respectively. He is associated with his father in farming in Nashville.
    Eric, the third son, married Eve Linsner of Palatine, Illinois in 1979. He is employed by Stotlar Grain at the Chicago Board of Trade.
    Joan, the third child of Ruth and Albert was born in 1928 and married Wm. Huffman, Jr. of Carbondale in 1947 where they own and operate a Funeral Home. They are the parents of two daughters, Jane, born in 1948 and Elizabeth, born in 1950. Jane married Mark Koprucki of Chicago in 1976. He is a Financial Analyst in the First National Bank of Cincinnati. Elizabeth married Bakr Abolkhair in 1977. He is an Economist from Ryadh, Saudi Arabia. They have one son, Abdullah, born in 1979 in Berkeley, California where they live.
    All the last five generations in this history were born in Nashville, Illinois, except Jane and Elizabeth Huffman born in Carbondale, Illinois.
