John Ernst Hoffman - b. Aug. 12, 1808 - d. March 11, 1862 - m. March 8, 1836 Magdaline Bruners - b. in Wuertemberg, Germany - d. May 9, 1939 in Lancaster, Ohio. 2 children - John Peter - William Alexander. John Ernst was born in Rothenufeln, near Minden, in the province of Westphalia in northern Germany. St. Paul's Evangelical Church records, Nashville, IL revealthat he came to the U.S. in 1832 and settled in Lancaster, Ohio.

2nd marriage on June 24, 1839 was to Catherine (also Hoffman) - no relation of Erdmannhausen, Wuertemberg in southern Germany. they were married in Lancaster, Ohio. They had 10 children.

Marriage records in the library of Fairfield Co. (Lancaster) Ohio give the date of marriage of John Hoffman to Magdaline Bruners as March 8, 1836. St. Paul's Evangelical Church records, Nashville, Illinois coroborate this, adding that she was from Wuertemberg, Germany and died May 9, 1939 in Lancaster. John and Magdaline were the parents of two sons, John Peter - born January 13, 1837 and William Alexander - born December 29, 1837.

About a month after Magdaline's death, he married Catherine, also Hoffman, whose full name as provided by the family tree from Erdmannhausen, Germany, was, Maria Justina Katharina.

Records kept by members of the family indicate that John E. and Catherine together with John's two little boys came to Washington Co., Illinois in 1840. Land grant records of Washington Co. Historical Museum show that he purchased farm land from the federal gov't on December 30, 1839 for $1.25 an acre. the gov't had passed a law in 1820 making this possible - with the stipulation that all sales must be cash.

This farm, now owned by the Albert Schorfhiede's is southwest of Nashville. I had until recently, believed that it was here that their 10 children were born. Records of St. John's Lutheran Church, New Minden, with their very earliest family groupings list Frederick, Anna, and Elisabeth as being born at New
Earliest records of St. John's New Minden list as charter members in 1846 Fred, John, and William Hoffman. John had the privilege of being a charter member of two churches - St. John's, New Minden in 1846 and St. Paul's Evangelical Nashville in 1854. In early years, the family also attended the Nashville Prairie Ev. Church (I have been told it was also called St. Luke's). In 1854, when St. Paul's was founded, records indicate he was one of the organizers - charter member and elected elder for 4 years.

Several cousins have visited Germany and brought back information about Catherine and her family. In addition, Catherine's daughter, Sarah who lived to be 88, was able to tell much about the family.

Catherine was born June 16, 1818 in Erdmannhausen, a small village near Stuttgart in Wuertemberg in southern Germany, in a section known as Swabia. Sarah said her mother was always homesick for Swabia and spoke frequently of being in "scho" nen (beautiful) Schwabenland".

Elmo Hohman, who visited this area said this was understandable, for Erdmannhausen is a beautiful country, consisting of high hills or small mountains, representing the outlying foothills of the Swiss and Bavarian Alps. In 1958, on one of Elmo's visits to the church and parsonage, the minister got out the early books and pointed out the actual entry of the date when Catherine, together with her parents, Johannes and Eva (nee Pommer) and her brothers and sisters emigrated to the U.S. This was in 1832 - the year after the birth and death of her youngest sister - Maria Dorothea.

They settled in Lancaster, Ohio, having come by sailing ship from Bremen, Germany to Philadelphia, and then by wagon to Lancaster. A ciary tells of Hoffmans landing in Philadelphia on a Christmas morning with Church bells ringing, after a sailing voyage of many weeks. We are not sure just which Hoffmans this was. Some 20 or more years ago when a cousin stopped at Lancaster to attend a family reunion, which for a number of years were held yearly, he found well over 100 Hoffmans - descendants of these Hoffmans. One, David, at that time was manager of Wiseman Dept. Store there. In spite of repeated efforts, I have learned very little about Catherine's brothers and sisters and double cousins and their families, many of whom, I believe, have remained in the Lancaster area. At least we know Catherine was the only one of her immediate family to come to Washington Co. as her daughter Sarah, in a letter to her nephew, George, wrote that her mother was the only one of the family to come here. Marriage and death records in Lancaster, have provided a little help. I ahve also learned that some are buried in the old Myers Cemetery, east of Lancaster in Berne Township. Included among these are a Johannes Hoffman - b. July 13, 1791 - d. Apr. 16, 1872 and wife Eva - b. 1795 d. July 20, 1876 - we believe these to be the same John and Eva who are Catherine's parents - also Johann Georg - b. Dec. 17, 1814 - d. Sept. 23, 1893 - Johann Fredrich - b. March 1816 - d. 1894 and Eva Magdalen Hoffman Sutter and John J. Sutter. Lutheran Minister - sons one 2 years old (no name on tombstone - at least not legible) d. Oct. 4, 1867 - and one 4 years old d. Oct 5, 1867. We have learned that the Sutters were the parents of at least 2 more children through family notes - they were Anna and Emma - last address Bellvue, Ohio. Eva was born Jan. 20, 1829 - m. Dec. 19, 1853 - no date of d.

The Lutheran Church in Erdmannhausen that Catherine attended as a girl has a baptismal font that dates back to 1494 and in 1969, when visited by Harold Hohman, had a membership of 2300.

Lancaster, Ohio, the Hoffmans first home in America, had been founded abnout 1800, by Co. Ebenezer Zane, famous merchant, trailblazer, prioneer and soldier of Wheeling. It was called New Lancaster at the request of Emanuel Carpenter, who came from Lancaster, Penn., as did many of the predominately early settlers.

Thanks to a cousin, Harold Hohman, who brought back a family tree from Erdmannhausen in 1969, we can trace Catherine's family back to 1662. I am including this tree as given to me, only translated into English.

On page 10 is a photostatic copy of the record of naturalization of John Hoffman, as it appears in Court Journal 13, page 129, dated the 8th day of Sept., 1838. I am very grateful to Elmer Hoffman of Washington D.C., a distant cousin, for securing this and sending it to me.

Caroline, who was teh fourth child born to Catherine and John E., was, according to her pictures and those who knew her, a very pretty young lady. She was born and grew up on a farm southwest of Nashville, She was an invalid the last ten years of her life, having suffered a stroke which left her paralyzed.

CAROLINE married HOHMAN ERNST HENRY FREDERICK on 17 May 1866. ERNST was born on 24 Feb 1838 in Seidinghausen in nw Germany; died on 17 Apr 1897. [Group Sheet]

Sarah was born at the Hoffman homestead southwest of Nashville and baptized at the Nashville Prairie Evangelical Church.
She was a very able business woman, having begun her business career in 1880 in Kansas City, Mo., in partnership with Miss julia Hucke. Later she was employed by Nugent Store in St. Louis and in 1883 returned to Nashville and worked in the store of her brother-in-law H. H. Buhrman. When Mr. Buhrman became postmaster of Nashville, Sarah became his very capable assistant. In 1905 she bought a millinery store on Nashville's Main Street, now occupied by the Nashville Savings and Loan Company. This business was conducted successfully until her retirement in 1928.
Although Sarah never married and had children of her own, she was a second mother to a number of nephews whose mothers died when they were quite young. One of these was George, her brother Frederick's son by his first wife, whom she cared for until Fred remarried. Others were her sister Elizabeth's sons and her sister Martha's two boys. These two sisters had both married Buhrmans and the two sets of children were brought up in the Herman Buhrman home as brothers, with Emma (Elisabeth's daughter) and Sarah running the household.
Sarah was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church, Nashville, for mrore than 56 years - for more than 25 years president of the Ladies Aid Society and for many years a Sunday School teacher.
She died at the home of her niece and nephew, Emma and Tom Krughoff, with whom she had lived for a number of years.

George and Caroline lived in germantown, Illinois, where he was a jeweler whose job was to repair railroad watches only. In later years he became postmaster of Germantown.

Louis was a printer, who left Nashville when he was 18 and went to St. Louis where he worked as a printer on Franklin Ave. He worked for a man named Sander and married his sister. They lived in St. Louis, Mo.

Henry Hoffman was born on a farm in the Hoyleton-North Prairie area. He was the third child and oldest son and helped on the farm until his younger brothers were old enough to help with the work, at which time he struck out on his own. He husked corn and did work on farms. It was in the Tower Hill, Il., area (75 mi. north of Nashville,) that he met the Gerhold family. The Gerhold family belonged to the Evangelical Church and at one time Henry considered the ministry but opposed the ceremony and the robes worn by Eangelical ministers.
Mary went to Castlewood, S. Dakota, in 1893 to keep house for her brother, Chris, and Henry soon followed and worked on farms there. On Sept. 18, 1894 they were married and took up farming. They joined the Methodist Church. The three oldest children were born here. Because Indians frequently stopped to water their horses and would look around in the house and leave, Mary and the children were frightened. They were not hostile and would not do or say anything but because of this and because of droughts and crop failure, the family moved back to Il. This was around 1900 and the family started farming around Bible Grove, Il. Two more children, Esther and Victor were born here. Because Henry had met and was a great admirer of Theodore Roosevelt, he named Victor - Victor Roosevelt and later Elmer - Elmer Theordore. Thile they lived at Bible Grove a salesman for Walter T. Raleigh Medicine Co. persuaded Henry to give up farming and go from farm to farm selling Raleight products. He was well-known and prospered. After he had accumulated a sum of money he wanted to buy a shoe store in Decatur but Mary didn't want her children brought up in the city and hoped they would become farmers.
About 1907, the family moved to Braddock, near Stude, N. Dakota, close to where his brother Edward owned a farm. Henry bought a farm and a steam threshing machine. Sine his was the only machine in the area, he was prospering. In the fall of 1910 he hired an engineer who disregarded Hy's,
orders not to cross a section of tall prairie grassland. Straw was the fuel for the engine and a stiff breeze set all the grass a fire. The dry grass burned fast destroying all faarms and crops in its path till it reached Long Lake. Henry had to pay for the damage so lost everything. Another baby, Ervin, was born ehre at Braddock. Now almost penniless and very depressed over his troubles he decided to move to Sedalia, Mo., where he had heard the Mo. Pacific R. R. was hiring men. Albert, the oldest son and his father took jobs in the shops. As soon as cheaper labor was available, they lost their jobs. Once agaain trouble hounded them - Ervin developed mastoditis and died.
In 1912 a friend from Fargo, N. Dakota, loaned the family train fare to Fargo where Henry worked for J. I. Case Tractor and Threshing Co. - Albert in the Post Office, and Lillian for Woolworths.
In 1914, the urge to farm came again. Through a Methodist Minister, a farm was located near Valley City, N. Dakota. Here in 1915 LeRoy was born. In 1920, a cyclone destroyed granaries filled with grain as well as crops in the field. Henry and Mary took bankruptcy to save the little they had.
The children except for Victor, Elmer and LeRoy had all left home. Henry bought land at Randall, near Little Falls, Minn. It was undeveloped with plenty of timber. He rented another small farm and most tillable land was planted with cucumbers to be sold to a Pickle Factory in the area. In winter Henry and Victor sold cordwood from the timber. When Copper Mining Co. was buying land in the area Henry leaned too late that the former owner had retained the mineral rights and he once again had to sell at a loss.
The family the moved to Russell, Kansas where Albert was hald owner of a tire shop - this was in 1923. Albert passed his postal exam, sold the shop and sent to work in the P. O. Henry worked as a salesman for Baker Medicine Co., which proved to be a dying business.
With the help of their children, Henry and Mary then went into retirement and lived in Valley City, N. Dakota, close to two of their daughters. In 1949, after putting up storm windows, Henry complained of being tired - three days later he died of a coronary thrombosis. Mary then went to live with her daughters, first with Esther and then with Lillian. On Jan. 30, 1960, Mary slipped, fell and broke her hip. She died three days later in her sleep.
Members of the family say the family had many hard times but also many happy times and were always close. The parents were always highly religious - did much work for the Methodist Church and had family devotions daily - morning and evening.

Edward's parents moved to Castlewood, S. Dakota around 1900 and it was here, through the church they both attended that Edward met Lydia Ganger, whom he married November 11, 1904. When Edward's folks moved back to Nashville, he took over their farm for a year and then moved to a farm in Hallock, Minn., where Leo, their first child, was born. Sometime later, Edward decided to become a salesman for Watkins Products and the family moved to Steele, North Dakota. The other three children, Milton, Harriet and Maynard were born here. In 1918 the family moved to Leonard, N. Dakota, where the father was employed by North American Creamery. Several years later in 1920 the family moved to River Falls, Wisconsin. Here Edward worked in an overall factory. Here the family grew up and when they moved to Minneapolis, Maynard chose to remain in River Falls.

Lydia was only 19 months old when her mother died after a short illness. She then went to live with her maternal grandparents, the Tuegels, in the New Minden area. Her brothers and sisters grew up in oter homes in the area.

He was born at Hoyleton, Illinois - died Stotts City, MO. He is buried at East View Cemetery near Stotts City. He was a farmer. He married on March 24, 1889 Emma Krueger - b. Oct. 1, 1869; d. 1954. Emma, too, was born at Hoyleton, Illinois. When she was a small child, her parents Christian Henry Krueger and his wife Catherine (nee Fricke) together with other families from the Hoyleton area, moved to Lawrence Co., Mo. One of these families was that of J. August Kleeman, who had married Louise Klein after the death of Anna Marie. William and Emma were married at the home of her parents 2 mi. south of Stotts City, Mo. They then bought a farm 4 mi. NW of Stotts City, where they lived until after William's death. Their first home was a log cabin, until a new home was built. Their children were all born there. In 1940, Emma, with two of her daughters moved into Stotts City. When the families froom Washington Co., Illnois, first went to Mo., they built an Evangelical Church and established a German School. However, when William and Emma were married, their farm was 3/4 mi. from a Methodist Church and 1/2 mi. from the Pleasant Hill Public School. Travel being slow then, all the children were brought up in this church and attended the school nearby. There were nine children.

Henry learned the merchandising business from his father's store. He bought 1/2 interest in the Schmitt Store - soon purchasing the entire business and was in business in Nashville 34 years. Although he grew up in teh Evangelical Church was was confirmed there, he joined the Presbyterian Church as a young man and was a member of that church for 37 years - 32 of which he served as elder. He also was clerk of the session and S. S. Supt.

John and Emma lived for a short time in Salem, Illinois, and then returned to Nashville, where he in partnership with Henry Paul, opened a hardward store sometime before 1900. In 1908, Mr. Paul sold his interest to Frank Gewe and went West for his health. John was one of the original owners of the Hohman Building, which was built in 1913 adn occupied by three Hohman brothers - John; William and Edward. When Edward left Nashville to move to Chicago, his interest in the building was purchased by Dr. George Green, his brother-in-law (husband of Clara Hohman). He occupied on of the upstairs offices until he died. The only remaining member of the Hohman family to occupy the building since the death in 1965 of Howard Hohman is Dr. Edgar Reinhardt, son-in-law of Dr. Green, who, until the building was sold in April of 1971 to Donald Williamson, was part owner.
John died in a Mt. Vernon hospital, unexpectedly, following surgery and while seemingly making a good recovery.

In early years he had as his partner his cousin, George Hohman, and tehy not only sold shoes but also repaired them. In later years George went into the ministry and William's son, Howard, joined him in the shoe business. Will died suddenly of a heart attach in his store.

Clara attended the old "cow-bell" school and was only 14 when her mother had a stroke which paralyzed her and made her an invalid for the last 10 years of her life. Her father passed away 5 years before her mother of what was believed to be cancer. Clara continued to live in the home and help care for her mother till she died and then her brothers until they married or left home. She then held a position in the local post office and the year before her marriage went to Vandalia to live with her sister Ida and work in the Atkinson-Brink Store.

Notes:

Ernst was born in Aviston, Illinois, but after the death of his parents, he and his brother were brought up in the Herman Buhrman home in Nashville, Illinois. Here he attended the German School of the Ev. Church (called the old cow-bell).
As a young man he took his jeweler and watchmaking apprenticeship under Peter Ziegel, Nashville. He married Mary Augusta Smith, daughter of Catherine and Morand Smith, owner of the Nashville Lumberyard. Because of a small pox epidemic, Ernst could not come to Nashville to be married, so Mary and her brother Myron went to Poplar Bluff for teh wedding. Ernst had started in the jewelry business in Piedmont, Mo., but soon after their marriage they moved to Springfield, Mo., wehre Ernst, with Mary's help, owned and operated a jewelry store for more than 50 years.
Here he was a charter member of Rotary, a Shriner and 32nd Degree Mason, served on the Springfield Public School Board over 15 years - also serving as it's president. He was elder for many years of the First and Calvary Presbyterian Church.
He dropped the "h" in Buhrman about 1918 or 20, when problems arose in business as to spelling and pronunciation. They are buried in East Lawn Cemetery and the marker reads Burman.

Clara lived at home and worked in the coat alteration dept. of Scruggs Vandervoort and Barney Dept. Store for 16 years. After her mother had a stroke, Clara quit and took care of her until she passed away. She and her father continued to live in the home and Clara did the same type of alteration work at Famous-Barr Co. She retired some years ago and after her father's death in 1944 continued to live in the family home until a few years ago when she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Home on South Broadway, St. Louis, Mo.
She still maintains membership in the Evangelical Church which was originally located at 23rd and Washington and attends services and Ladies Aid meetings frequently.
This church, Bethany United Church of Christ, has within the last two years united with Peace Church and is called Bethany-Peace United Church of Christ and is located at 11936 Bellefontaine Road.

New Old Tones at Bethany-Peace
Two old bells from Bethany United Church of Christ will provide new tones for the newly-merged congregation at bethany-Peace United Church of Christ, 11936 Bellefontaine Road.
The Bells ahve hung in the tower of Bethany Church at Red Bud and Rosalie Aves. for 56 years and ahve now been moved to the new quarters. They are temporarily located on a platform at the right of the entrance of Peace Church. The merger was approved Feb. 22, 1970, and incorporated January 14, 1971. In 1879, the ladies society (Frauen Verein) donated the bells for the church at 23rd and Washington St. They are called Mary & Martha. Clara Hoffman a long time member at Bethany, provided funds for the moving of the bells.
"The Bells at Bethany Church have been very dear to me, always," she says. "At the old church at 23rd & Washington the bells would ring every Sat. evening at 7:00 P.M. I can remember back as a child, my grandmother and I would walk up the block to the Church, she telling me the story of Mary and Martha living in the little town of Bethany. Living near the church most of my life and hearing the bells ring over the years, I enjoyed them and I hope and pray that Mary and Martha will continue to ring many more years for others to enjoy."
A tower for the bells is to be built as soon as funds can be obtained.
The membership of the new congregation is 1000.

Waldo Brink was born November 11, 1895 to Henry J. and Minnie Brink, nee Hoffman, on a farm in Hoyleton Twp. in the community called North Prairie. This farm had been in the Brink Family since 1845, when Waldo's great-grandfather and great-grandmother, Ernest Freiderich Wilhelm and Anna Maria Ilsabein Meyer Brink came from Eicksen, Rothenuffeln, Kreis Minden, West Prussia, Germany and settled here. They came from Germany to New Orleans and up the Mississippi River by river steamer to Grand Tower, Illinois. Here they were icebound and had to travel by oxcart the remainder of the way to Washington County. They both died within a few months of their arrival and are buried in a small cemetery on the original Brink homestead.
Some of their older sons had come to Washington County a few years sooner, one of which was Wilhelm Brink, grandfather of Waldo. Wilhelm Brink was born on January 24, 1820, married Mary Woepke Gerken on November 25, 1849. They had eight children - four of which lived to maturity - William, Charles, Henry J. and Theodore. Wilhelm died June 11, 1889. His son, Henry J. married Minnie Hoffman, daughter of William A. and Minnie Hoffman, nee Tugel, on February 2, 1882. They lived on the Brink homestead. Henry J. was born on November 17, 1857 and died April 3, 1925. Minnie was born November 14, 1863 and died October 2, 1958. They are buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. Henry J. and Minnie had three children, Hannah, Bertha, and Waldo.
Waldo served in the U.S.Army during World War 1, and upon his return home he married Anna Krughoff, daughter of Frederick and Anna Krughoff, nee Bartlesmeyer, on September 23, 1919. For a few years they rented and farmed in the North Prairie area. They had two daughters, Winona Anna and Minerva Pearl. After the death of Waldo's father in 1925, he and his family moved on the Brink homestead where he and his wife lived the remainder of their lives. Waldo died on October 28, 1967. Anna died on May 28, 1972, and are buried in the North Prairie Cemetery.
Winona and Minerva now own the original Brink farm. Winona married Elmer J. Huckshold on February 27, 1946, and they have two children, Karl Frederick and Kristine Ann. Elmer died in 1972, and Winona and her children moved to the Brink farm in 1974.
Minerva married William J. Clouser on December 28, 1955, and they have one child, Stephen David. They live in St. Louis, MO.

Brink--Krughoff

Waldo Brink and Miss Anna Krughoff, both well-known and popular young people of North Prairie, were united inmarriage Tuesday evening at 8:00 o'clock, the ceremony being performed at the home of Mrs. Martha 'Krughoff. Rev.G. F. Brink of Waterloo was the officiating minister. Dainty refreshments were served after the ceremony had been aid,the families being present. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Brink and is an enterprising young farmer. His sweet and estimable bride is a daugher of the late Fred Krughoff. They will make their home on the Fred Bartelsmeyer farm in North Prairie.

Hugh enlisted in the Air Force in 1917 but after three months training at Princeton University, he was honorably discharged due to a lack of higher mathematics. In Dec. of 1917 his father died and he returned to Washington to be with his mother. He worked for the District Government. He graduated in law from the National University in Washington D. C. in 1919.
In 1918, Hugh was appointed head of the contract dept. of the Emergency Fleet Corp. Shipping Board. Fifter people worked under him. By 1925, there was no more of this type of work. He then went into Real Estate and in later years worked for the Red Cross and in Public Relations in New York City.
In 1953, Hugh wrote a book "The Four Regional Research Institutes". He had been sent with scientists from these institutes to study industrial problems in Germany in 1950 and in Italy, France and England in 1952. He was in poor health the last years of his life and died in Newton Baker Veterans Center, Martinsburg, W. Va.

Elmo graduated from the University of Illinois in 1916. He was a campus leader at the University. While there he was a member of the track team and won the Conference Medal in 1916 for combined scholarship and athletic ability. He was a Jr. Phi Beta Kappa member of the Sr. honor society and a member of Delta Phi social fraternity which was at that time a local called Iris. After receiving his MA in history in 1917 at the U. of I., he spent 2 1/2 years as a Lt. in the Army in W. W. I.
He then did graduate work in Economics at Harvard. His entire teaching career, from 1923-1962 was spent on the faculty of Northwestern, with almost 10 years of leave for study and research in Europe and Asia - 1928 - 30; 1936 - 37; 1951, 1952, 1957 - 58; and 1963 - 64. From 1942 - 45 he was on full time leave on O. P. A. and the War Labor Board. He has written 3 books in the field of maritime and international labor economics, as well as many articles and reports in the same field. He is now retired and lives in Evanston.

Notes:

Ralph graduated from the University of Illinois Dental School in 1922. Dentist on Chicago's South Side. Veteran U.S. Army W. W. I. Discharged Dec. 11, 1918. Retired by disability in 1941. Died May 21, 1947, at age 49, at Illinois Veterans Hospital, Elgin, Illinois, after a lingering illness. The two children were reared in the home of their mother's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lehman of Chicago, Illinois.

Howard was the 3rd generation of Hohmans to own the Hohman Shoe Store in Nashville, Illinois. He died suddenly at his home of a heart attack.

After Lester retired from teaching at Proviso East High School, Maywood, IL., they moved to a Methodist Retirement Center at Franklin, Indiana, where many years of retirement were enjoyed.

Arleen attended MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois 2 years. Graduated from the U. of Illinois - B.A. degree - also has master's from Illinois. Taught English and History in Nashville High School 5 years before marriage and directed plays.

Per Narratives of Randolph County, Sparta, Illinois library, they had a son George Fred Frye b. January 11, 1943. Is this the same as George Lester Fry?

ARLEEN married FRY ALVA LESTER (FRYE). ALVA was born on 7 Jan 1905 in Of Ina, IL; died on 14 Mar 1987; was buried in Evangelical Cemetery, Nashville, Washington Co., IL.. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Bernice was born in Hoyleton, Illinois, to Dr. George and Clara Hohman Green, the family having moved to Nashville in 1920. She attended Illinois Woman's College (now MacMurray College), Jacksonville, Illinois for 1 year and the University of Illinois for 2 years. She, too, has participated in various civic and church activities - among them member and past president of the American Legion Aux. - Sunday School Teachers for 13 years and others.

Bernice continues to live in the family home in Nashville, enjoying the companionship fo family and friends. She continues in her role as the family historian, having written three books on the genealogy of the Hoffman, Reinhardt, and Carson families. She also enjoys crocheting baby afghans for the infants of family and friends. Bernice has become adept at avoiding the Illinois cold and snow by visiting family members in Florida during the winter months.Bernice Reinhardt 3/2000

Roy graduated from the U. of Chicago with a B.S. in June 1926 and received his M.D. from Rush Medical School June 16, 1931. Practiced medicine in Chicago - died suddenly of a heart attack, while driving his car.

Graduate of University of Chicago and Rush Medical School - specialized in Psychiatry. He was on the staff of the Veterans Administration Hospital, Fort Lyon, Colorado, at the time of his death. Died suddenly of a heart attack and is buried in Chicago.
