Herman, son of Johann Ernst Heinrich Buhrman, known as Henry Buhrman Sr., was born in Unterlubbe, Kries Minden, westfalen, Konigreich Preuszen, Germany. The family left Germany in 1852, coming to Nashville via New Orleans and St. Louis. the trip took 9 weeks and 4 days and was made by steamboat, railroad, and horse-drawn wagon. The family brought with it a melodeon which was made in Stuttgart, Germany by the Philip trayser Co. and is still in its original condition. It now graces the Washington County Historical Museum, together with other items from the Buhrman household - a gift of Bert Buhrman Jr., his great grandson, and other members of the family. Early in life Herman entered the mercantile business and in later years was appointed postmaster of Nashville, during Pres. McKinley's administration. His father was one of the founders of St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Nashville, where he also was a member and served as an officer.

HERMAN married HOFFMANN SOPHIE ELISABETH on 1 May 1864. SOPHIE (daughter of HOFFMANN JOHANN ERNST and HOFFMAN SOPHIE MARIA JUSTINA KATHARINA) was born on 26 Aug 1844 in Minden, Washington County, Illinois (lst 2 names may be reversed).; died on 13 Jan 1888. [Group Sheet]

August was said to have been the first organsit of St. Paul's Evangelical Church, Nashville. He played the melodeon which has parents had brought from Germany and which is now a part of our Washington Co. Historical Museum.
August and Martha lived in Aviston, Illinois, where he practiced medicine, having graduated on March 4, 1875, from Missouri Medical College, St. Louis, Mo. His license to practice in the State of Illinois is dated 1877. Both died at an early age, just six months apart. He was 33 and she 30.

Emma's mother died at an early age, and Emma, with the help fo her mother's sister, Sarah, devoted her early life to caring for her father and five younger brothers and two orphaned double cousins - Ernst and Otto Buhrman.

EMMA married KRUGHOFF THOMAS S.. THOMAS (son of KRUGHOFF OBERST LOUIS and SEWELL CAROLINE) was born on 12 Feb 1869; died in 1954. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Henry learned the merchandising business from his father's store. He bought 1/2 interest in the Schmitt Store - soon purchasing the entire business and was in business in Nashville 34 years. Although he grew up in teh Evangelical Church was was confirmed there, he joined the Presbyterian Church as a young man and was a member of that church for 37 years - 32 of which he served as elder. He also was clerk of the session and S. S. Supt.

HENRY married LANE CARRIE on 28 Dec 1892. CARRIE was born on 6 Jul 1868; died on 29 Jan 1966. [Group Sheet]

Oscar was a printer and worked as a compositor on the Nashville Journal for eight years. At the time of his death, he was working in the Forecast Division of the U. S. Weather Bureau, Washington D. C. Died suddenly of a stroke.

Notes:

Ernst was born in Aviston, Illinois, but after the death of his parents, he and his brother were brought up in the Herman Buhrman home in Nashville, Illinois. Here he attended the German School of the Ev. Church (called the old cow-bell).
As a young man he took his jeweler and watchmaking apprenticeship under Peter Ziegel, Nashville. He married Mary Augusta Smith, daughter of Catherine and Morand Smith, owner of the Nashville Lumberyard. Because of a small pox epidemic, Ernst could not come to Nashville to be married, so Mary and her brother Myron went to Poplar Bluff for teh wedding. Ernst had started in the jewelry business in Piedmont, Mo., but soon after their marriage they moved to Springfield, Mo., wehre Ernst, with Mary's help, owned and operated a jewelry store for more than 50 years.
Here he was a charter member of Rotary, a Shriner and 32nd Degree Mason, served on the Springfield Public School Board over 15 years - also serving as it's president. He was elder for many years of the First and Calvary Presbyterian Church.
He dropped the "h" in Buhrman about 1918 or 20, when problems arose in business as to spelling and pronunciation. They are buried in East Lawn Cemetery and the marker reads Burman.

Notes:

Otto learned the jewelry business from his brother and owned and operated a jewelry store in Jacksonville, Illinois for many years. Russel Vernon, Garnet's nephew, took over the jewelry store when Otto died.

Notes:

Hugh enlisted in the Air Force in 1917 but after three months training at Princeton University, he was honorably discharged due to a lack of higher mathematics. In Dec. of 1917 his father died and he returned to Washington to be with his mother. He worked for the District Government. He graduated in law from the National University in Washington D. C. in 1919.
In 1918, Hugh was appointed head of the contract dept. of the Emergency Fleet Corp. Shipping Board. Fifter people worked under him. By 1925, there was no more of this type of work. He then went into Real Estate and in later years worked for the Red Cross and in Public Relations in New York City.
In 1953, Hugh wrote a book "The Four Regional Research Institutes". He had been sent with scientists from these institutes to study industrial problems in Germany in 1950 and in Italy, France and England in 1952. He was in poor health the last years of his life and died in Newton Baker Veterans Center, Martinsburg, W. Va.
