(W 5,539: S.C. & VA)
Grayson County, VA
On the 24th day of September 1832 personally apprearing in open court, before the Justice of the court of Grayson County now sitting Benjamin Phipps, a resident of Grayson County in the state of Virginia aged 70 years who being first duly sworn according to the law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress passed Jun 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States after the happening of the following circumstances. He was living at the house of Capt. John Cox on New River in Montgomery County, Virginia, now Grayson County, VA about the year 1779 or 80 engaged in making a crop of corn, when Col. Roberts at the head of a company of Tories, came there and made prisoners of himself, William Craig and Beverly Matkins. The said Tories took the declarant and carried him to the British army commanded by Lord Rawden. He remained with the said army, sick at the time of the battle of the Hanging rock, when the said army marched to Camden,
After this the Declarent returned to New River in Grayson County after an absence of three years, as near as can now be recalled. He was afterward in an excursion against the Tories in the mountains, under James Cox, who acted as Capt. in the place of his father, Capt. John Cox, who was absent on a tour against the Indians. In this excursion they came up with the Tories, killed and wounded the whole party, except one who was the brother of Green, their commander, and who afterwards joind the American Army as a regular soldier.
The Declarant will not say how long he was engaged in the US service in the whole, for fear he might err as to the precise time, but he is confident it was not less than six months.
The declarant was born in Guilford County in the State of NC in the year 1761 or 2 as he believes, but has no record of his age.
He was in SC when he entered the service, and since the Revolutionary Was he has lived in Grayson County where he now lives. He has no documentary evidence to prove his service, and never received any discharge from the service. He is known to James Cox, a contemporary survivor, and to Lewis Hail and Stephen Hail, who can testify as to the character for honesty and as to the belief of his service in the Revolutionary War. He hereby relinquishes any claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. Sworn to, and subscribed, this day and year aforesaid.
Signed with his mark
Benjamin Phipps
Mr. Stephen Hail, a clergyman, residing in the County of Grayson, and Lewis Hail, residing in the same county hereby certify that we are acquainted with Benjamin Phipps, who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration: that we believe him to be 70 years of age: that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution: and that we concur in that opinion.
Sworn and subscribed the ay and year aforesaid.
Stephen Hair, Jr.
Lewis Hail
And the said court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter, and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the War Department that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he states and the court further certifies that it appears to them, Stephen Hail, Jr. who has signed the preceding certificate is a clergyman resident in the County of Grayson and that Lewis Hail who also signed the same is a resident in the County of Grayson and is a credible person and that their statement is entitled to credit.
I, Martin Deckerson, Clerk of the Court of Grayson County, do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings of the said Court in the matter of the application of Benjamin Phipps for a pension.
In testimony where I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of said Court at Office this 15th day of October 1832.

Another name that follows the same pattern is that of Phipps. The 1751 map of Virginia by Peter Jefferson and Joshua Fry shows the Phipps home site in the same general area where Noah Hampton lived. In Granville, NC, in 1760, Isiah Phipps wills to son Isiah a plantation in Hampshire County, Virginia and in Granville, to wife Ann the 200 acres bought by Andrew Hampton in Granville the day before. The name Benjamin Phipps is also found in the Frederick/Hampshire area of VA in 1760, then in Granville, NC, Rowan, NC, and then into Grayson County, VA on the New River.Benjamin married HASH Jane on 5 Jul 1782 in Grayson County, VA?. There is a verbal history on "Old T.K." saying that he had to leave Virginia and his home in a hurry. The story goes that he was at a Fall Harvest Dance at a colored church and had pulled back a slab from over a well, and a slave of his uncle's had fallen into the well and been so injured that he was unable to work anymore. TK's uncle, upon learning this, had sworn out a warrant for T.K.'s arrest. One of his friends told him that he was about to be arrested, upon hearing this TK set out for lamp oil with an ox cart and kept on going. This was within a month of the death of his father so the story does not ring true.
History of Jersey and Green Counties, Continental Historical Society, December 1885. Page 404:
Thomas K. Phipps came to this country in 1848, and purchased then 40 acres of land in the western portion of the country. Three years later he sold this land and bought another forty to which he added 120 acres more in 1885, and divided his estate among his children, reserving 200 acres for himself. Mr. Phipps cleared nearly all his land, which was covered with bushes and small timber. he has been an enterprising and successful farmer. In 1878, he rented his farm to one of his sons and moved to Rosedale, where he built a dwelling house and a store building, and engaged in merchandising, purchasing a general stock of goods to the value of about a thousand dollars. He continued in business there four years, then on account of the death of his son, who was killed, he retunred to his farm where he now lives. He built a store room near his residence, and now sells general merchandise.
Thomas K. Phipps was born in Virginia, December 17, 1819. He remained in that state until 17 years old, then came west, and visited Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa, after which he went south to Louisiana and Mississippi. he was married in the latter state to Martha Ruy (sp), who was born May 9, 1929. In 1847 he moved to Illinois and three years later to this county. Mr. and Mrs. Phipps have four children-Lewis, born June 11, 1855, died Feb. 2, 1882, John, born May 23, 1857, Mary J. born in 1859 and died in infancy, and Isabel, born Feb 10, 1861, now married to Leonard Ratcliff. Mr. Phipps is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a republican politically. He has held all of the township offices, including justice of the peace, and is one of the leading citizens of Rosedale township.
Page 399:
Pleasant Grove grist mill was built in 1883 by T.K. Phipps. This mill is equipped with one corn buhr, and has a capacity for grinding 150 bushels of meal per day. It is run by a steam engine, which is used, during the season, for running a threshing machine.Mr. Phipps threshes from 32,000 to 40,000 bushels of grain per year.
(Ron Phipps states that he suspects that this was the steam engine that John Thomas Phipps traded in for a newer steam engine and was subsequently unable to make the payments on it, as a a result he lost his father's farm.)
The Union Mills were built by the Union Mill co. the company consisted of Dr. W. Park, T.K. Phipps, J.H. Belt, Peter Dranery, William Krueger, Asa Briggs, Frank Brown, Charles McDaniels, John Terry, Z. Reddish and others. After completion, the mill was leased to J.H. Belt who operated it one year for the company, and afterwards ran it a year for himself. Steven Reddish then ran the business one years, and was succeeded by T.K. Phipps and Leonard Radcliff.

Witnesses for the second marriage were Jewel W. Carrol and William Bryant (William is believed to be Mary's brother, a neighbor, and a Civil War veteran.

Mary Matilda Bryant had divorced John Thomas on Sep 22, 1884 and named Mary Dean as co-respondant in the divorce papers.

John Thomas then married Mary margaret plumb Lippert, born October 14, 1865, died November 12, 1944. They were married on September 25, 1889 in Rosedale County, IL.
Family history also holds that John Thomas was forced into a marriage with a servant girl that he had gotten pregnant while he was still married to Mary Mathilda. He always denied that he was the father and later both mother and child died.
John Thomas died of rabies in 1916. He had been bitten by a rabid dog while performing his duties as Marshall of Wood River, IL and killing the dog.
