    • Information provided by Hudson Sonnenberg McGlynn, husband of daughter of Peter.

The parents of Lydia Hinz went from Germany to Russia at the turn of the century. They were seeking an improvement in lifestyle. They had a farm and vineyards, but lost everything in the Russian revolution. All Germans were forced to speak Russian and things were very hard for the family. In 1942 the German troops took Odessa and Peter and Lydia and the family took off on foot for Germany, following the German retreat. In their escape, the family lost all of its possessions. It took the family years to reach Esslingen, Germany. The family was not welcomed in Germany because they were seen as Russian. The family lived in a one room shack and survived on discarded GI rations to feed the family in the first year. In order to grow crops, Lydia followed horses into town to pick up droppings to use as fertilizer. They moved to the United States in 1956.
