  Daniel (senior) Doughty's will of 1804 mentions two sons, Joseph and Laban. In 1805, Laban's name was changed to Daniel Laban Milton Doty due to Laban Oakley's (father in law to Daniel senior) involvement in the poisoning of Daniel senior. Daniel and brother Joseph moved to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama at a young age. They acquired land and lived there for a short time before moving to Mississippi. Daniel settled in Attala County, and there he engaged in farming and cattle raising. On his land was a large spring of water, which still bears his name today; Doty Springs. Daniel adopted the Doty spelling.
