- August Homburg emigrated to the U.S. from Preus-Minden, Germany, in 1883 at the age of fourteen, coming with his older brother William at this early age to avoid serving in the German Army, William already having served his time. They came by train from New York, leaving the train at Irvington, IL., and walked to the Frederick Krughoff farm near Huegely, Il., where James Wacker now lives. After staying with the Krughoffs a short time, William moved on to Kansas to seek his fortune and August went to work as a hired hand on the farm of Henry Hoffman southwest of Nashville. This farm was featured in a previous county history. In 1894, August married his employer's daughter Elizabeth and they started farming on an adjacent farm. They lived their entire married life on this farm.
