Wilbur Grove, 45, residing near Lawrenfce Co. Country Club, was killed Friday night when struck by an automobile two miles west of Lawrenceville on the Old State Road. It is presumed that he was walking along the right side of the pavement when overtaken and struck by Murvel Dale Welker. Welker and 3 friends, all ages 16-18, had been drinking, and thought they had struck a horse. They did not report the incident. The body was found soon after the accident by neighbors. Investigation disclosed that the skull was fractured, the left leg, the left arm, the left shoulder and the right hip broken, the nose crushed and one eye mashed. He had been dragged for a distance of approximately 30 feet and his pocket watch was picked up 50 feet from the place he was struck.
Wilbur Grove was born in Lawrence Co, the son of Thomas and Flora Walters Grove. He was 45 years old. he was married to Martha Bennet, who with two sons, Bobbie Joe, age 9, and Raymond Lee, age 7, survive him. He is also survived by his mother, 3 brothers, and one sister: Glessie Grove of Sumner, IL; Sgt. Lester Grove of San Bernardino, CA; Leslie Grove of Lawrenceville; and Mrs. Essie South of Hammond, IL. Funeral services were held at the White House Church with burial in the White House Cemetery.
