Notes - Ulrich left Switzerland probably in the 1670s according to German records that say he arrived in the Palatinate around then. His history as written in 1766 by his grandson Martin, the Mennonite Minister at Mannheim, states that Hans Ulrich was a "Bernerman" from the area of Aargau. The Canton of Bern did include the area of Aargau. This fits with the earliest records for Mellingers in Switzerland. Though documentation is weak, it appears Hans Ulrich was in the Palatinate as early as 1674 at which time he was apparently 34 years old. The child of Hans Ulrich, Vincenz, died at Ruchheim in 1748 at the age of 80--Ruchheim was where Benedict was identified in 1654--just 6 years after the end of the Thiry-year War that had devastated the Palatinate. This timing would also indicate that Benedict also came from Switzerland.
In 1674 he rented an estate belonging to the Count of Leiningen. He settled on Franchensteilbschen, or bei Gunthers Blum about 1680. In 1684 he was temporarily on Cherry House Garden Farm about 2 hours from Mannheim where he died. His son Martin stated that "he was a small person, but very hearty with a great and fresh soul."
