  All of the information on John Griffith and his wife and children was provided by Paul Phipps Additional information provided by Jeanine Scholz Orange County Tithables for 1736 has a David Griffen and a John Griffen listed, perhaps one of these is the father of John Griffith, born 1740. 1793 Wythe County, VA Land Tax List has John Griffith listed with 189 acres valued at 50 pounds. 1793 Wythe County, VA Personal Property Tax Lists has John Griffith listed with one tithe, one black over 16 years of age, and six horses. Note by Jeanine Scholz: There is a will for a John Griffith who died in Shenandoah County, BA in 1820. The list of his children is almost the same as the list for our John Griffith so there is some concern that these two individuals have been confused. However, the Shenandoah County John Griffith who died in 1820 had a daughter Nancy who was 27 years younger than our Nancy. Also, his daughter Catharine was dead by 1820 where our Catherine was alive and married to James Phipps. There will need to be some further work done to ensure that the two John Griffiths are not confused.
