- Johannes Phipps appears in a disposition of 1292, then declaring that he was about 60 years old, which means he was born about 1232 A.D.

The name does not occur again for another 200 years. Since we then find it in Cemeley, Somersetshire (mentioned in its latin form in the above inquisition), it would appear that the family continued to own property in that county and that Johannes Phipps was the progenitor of the name.
Almost every source agrees that the name Phipps is derived from the baptismal name Philip, which comes from the Greek word for "lover of horses."
