John Phipps Dies From Injuries:
Suffered Intensely
Wood River Marshall leaves wife and large family, one son not heard from. John T. Phipps, Village Marshall at Wood River, died shortly after midnight Tuesday Morning in St. Joseph's Hospital from rabies as a result of being bitten by a rabid dog last October 13.
The death of Mr. Phipps was expected. He was in very bad condition when taken to the hospital and grew steadily worse. he was in a high state of nervous excitement and manifested all the symptoms of rabies including a very pronounced aversion to water.
The suffering of the afflicted man was excruciating. He was attended by some of the members of his family up to the point where they became completely exhausted by their vigil and went home.
Phipps was 58 years of age. Before going to Wood River he had been a farmer in Jersey County. He was known as a man with high conceptions of his duty and made a good officer. It was while he was attempting to execute the dog which had bitten a child that he was bitten and he paid no attention to the wound and went home.
