- Both Elijah and his younger brother Nelson bought property in Iron County while still living in Washington Co, MO., perhaps that section of Washington Co became Iron Co when it was formed in 1857. They lived next to each other for the rest of their lives, Nelson outliving Elijah by several years. They lived in a place which became known as Hawk's Lane in Iron County, and later on a school was built there which was called Hawk's school. Nelson contributed financially to the construction of the school.
