    photograph of his monument is on file as well as photos of the old VanHook

    Harrison County, KY Commissioned Officer, Samuel Van Hook Lieut. 20th Regiment
    April 17, 1797. With George Rogers Clark on his Indiana expedition.

    Samuel and his son Benjamin were taken prisoner and marched to Detroit
    where they were held prisoner for 4 years and 2 months. They returned
    to Kentucky. Samuel was a Revolutionary War Veteran and later a founder of
    Harrison County, Kentucky. He proposed many articles tothe Virginia House
    relative to Kentucky's legislative system. Samuel is listed several times as a
    DAR progenitor. Was with Daniel Boone's expedition.

    Ruddles (also called Hinkston's and Licking) Fort
    "Built in 1779 by Isaac Ruddell one mile from Lair Station near Bourbon
    County line, now in Harrison County, about seven miles from Paris. Most of the
    following persons and others unknown resided at Ruddle's Fort in 1780,at the
    time it was taken by the British and Indian warriers under Captain Bird. It was
    here that cannon was used for the first time against the helpless prisoners."

    !NOTE: Without knowing the ages of the children it is difficult to say which
    were Samuel's and Hannah Higgins. With the late marriage dates it is likely
    that most of the children were by Hannah Wilson Williams since Hannah Higgins
    died in 1780 at the defeat of Ruddle's Station.
