George graduated from St. Louis Colleg of Physicians and Surgeons, having worked his way through college. He was a Railroad telegrapher in Wyoming, Montana and E. St. Louis before entering medical school, nites, and in summer. After graduation he opened an office for the practice of medicine at Hoyleton, Illinois, in June of 1906 and practiced there until 1920. His office in Hoyleton was in the home and the front room, which was the office, boasted of a dental chair, in addition to medical equipment. Dr. Edward Hohman, who was a dentist in Nashville, Illinois, and his brother-in-law, arrived each Tuesday to take care of dental problems. Emergencies that arose between these visits, had to be coped with by the doctor as best he could.
In those early years Dr. Green was a familiar sight riding around the country-side on horseback, ministering to his patients.
He moved to Nashville in November of 1920 and continued to practice there until his death, Jan. 6, 1948.
Like his father, who served as treasurer of Washington Co., and his brother Will who was Co. Judge for 40 years and his brother, Hugh, who served several terms in the Illinois House of Representatives, he was a staunch Republican and was completing his third term as Coroner of Washington County, when he died suddenly, slumped over the steering wheel of his car.
After the death of his wife, his sister, Martha Darrow, who was a widow, kept house for him for about 2 years until he married Mae Ankershiel Muenter.
