Chas. W. Owens worked for the Frisco RR in Monet, MO. There was an extended railroad strike in 1923 and caused some twelve families from Monet to move to Washington, IN where their railroad employment continued. They included the Paynes, Haynes (finally went back), Millers (went back later), Coatneys, Wires (went back early).

Chas. W. Owens lived in what was called lt. house keeping in the Walker home (folks of Paul Walker) and later in the Mileys home.

In Monet, they attended the Methodist Protestant Church on the hill.
    A. Lucille Owens Gaither only remembers attending the Free Methodist Church through influence of Walkers and Mileys.

    A. Lucille was three and Mother ten when they moved to Washington.
    C. W. Owens worked in the railroad shop in Monett until an extended workmen strike caused them to move to Washington, IN in 1923 to work at the B & O Roundhouse there.

Chas. died at age of 48. He worked often in Ohio at Paynesville, Columbus, and Estabulla, Toledo for short periods of time. He died of a ruptured appendix - perionidus.

He was a car repairman for RR, a carpenter. His father was also a carpenter in Monet. Uncle Boots was in Washington for awhile. He too was a B & O carpenter.

During winter of '35-36', Charles was away from home, Lucille and Mother at home alone, and their mother got a piece of toothpick lodged in her intestines and perinoidus set in. She died in July of '36.

Mother (Lorene) met Dad (Herald) through church. Herald and Lorene lived in the brick house with John Wesley Gines when they were first married. South of their home on Edwardsport Road, Washington, IN.

John Wesley Gines lived at Hyatt Station prior to this. Thought the Hosses lived there too. Not sure when the Gines moved to Washington.

Map of cemetery in Gines file.

On the back of an old sales slip, Charles had written the following: (Wanda L. Gines has the sales slip)
Just one year ago today teh dearest flower on earth to me was taken away to be with God who gave her to me for awhile and in our ups and downs and our trials we shared with other love we had our heart ackes and so on but thank God there is some day we may join hands again around God's white throne.

Wanda L. Gines has a well worn card holder from a billfold with 5 small photos in it that C. W. Owens (according to Lorene Gines) carried most of his life with him. The photos are not labeled so identities are questionable.

Newspaper note under Hospital information: Mrs. Charles W. Owens, Washington route one, was admitted for treatment this morning. We're assuming this was prior to her death as a result of Peritonitis. (Wanda L. Gines has the clipping)

    PRESS NOTES
VEDA E. OWENS DIES FOLLOWING BRIEF ILLINESS
Jersey Street Woman Died in Hospital of Peritonitis.
Mrs. Veda Elmira Owens, 40, wife of Charles W. Owens of Jersey Street, died this morning at 5 o'clock at the Daviess County Hospital where Thursday she submitted to a major operation.
Death of the woman was attributed to peritonitis, which had developed prior to the operation. She had been seriously ill since last Sunday, but had been in failing health for some time prior to that.
Doctors this morning explained that starting last Sunday Mrs. Owens suffered severe cramping, then experienced locked bowels. Thursday noon an operation was performed, and two of the intestines were found grown togethr. Further probing revealed that a piece of toothpick had been swallowed by Mrs. Owens at some time, and that it had worked through one of the intestines, causing a sore which reslted in the intestines growing together and causing the fatal illness. Peritonitis developed to cause ehr death early today.
Born in Stone County, Missouri, on September 1, 1895, the deceased was a daughter of Francis Marion Taylor and Jane Philbert Taylor. The father survives and lives at Monett, Missouri, but the mother preceded the daugter in death. Mrs. Owens was married to Charles W. Owens on December 25, 1910, and three children were born to the union, one dying in infancy and the other two being survivors. They are Mrs. Lorene Gines of Washington and Lucille Owens, at home.
Brothers and sisters surviving are Lafe and Otis Taylor, Mrs. Lavina Martin of Waco, Texas, Mrs. Velie Stewart of Jenkins, Missouri, and Mrs. Dollie Dummitt of Monett, Missouri.
Mrs. Owens was a member of the Free Methodist Church and of the Security Benefit Association of this city.
Funeral arrangements are not complete. James A. Gill and Sons will have charge.

IN MEMBORY OF MRS. CHARLES OWENS

There's a seat empty in our church today
For some one who has gone away,
She has gone to be with Jesus
In the land of perfect day.

"Tis our dear Sister Owens who we all loved so well
She has said good night to us here,
To go to a better world than this
"Tis where they know no fear.

She has gone from this world of sorry
Gone from this world of pain
She will never have sickness or sorrow
    Or heartaches ever again.

I'm sure she's happy in Heaven
Where Jesus, the Lamb is the Light,
    Where never cometh the darkness
    For everything's lovely and bright.

She is feasting with Jesus in heaven
    Resting beneath the green tree
She is looking toward the Pearly Gates
Wathing for you and for me.

    Although our hearts were saddened
When we said good night to her here
Our hearts will also be gladdened
When we say good morning up there.

This poem was written by Nellie Burrous in memory of my mother at her death. Lorene Gines

MEMORIAL (a newspaper clipping - no date or name of paper)

In loving remembrance of our mother, Mrs. F. M. Taylor, who died one year ago, July 29, 1928.

Earth has lost its look of gladness,
Heaven seems to be more bright,

    Took its heavenly flight.

In life we loved her dearly
And in death we do the same.

Of you and wish you were here again.

I think of you dear mother in silence--
No eye can see me weep
But many a silent tear I shed
    While others are asleep.

Dear mother, could you speek to us
    And live with us again
Our aching hearts then would be eased
But this we wish in vain.

You are gone, Mother, but not forgotten
    Never will they memory fade,
    Sweetest thought shall ever linger
Around the grave where you are laid.

Just the crossing of the river,

    Dear Friend: (Leonard Carey)
I appreciate so much the material you have sent me especially since we are not sure that Wiley Catholic Owens has a connection with William King Owens. However, it is fascinating to me. For quite some time I have worked on the Gines line. An old trunk which became ours on the death of Herald's parents gave us much information. There were family Bibles, personal Bibles (over 100 years old), birth certificates dated 1843, marriage licenses, pictures and old postal cards. I've gone through them many times. Our name was originally spelled Geines. There are some old postal cards addressed to Herald's grandmother as Mrs. Hannah Gines, others to Mrs. Hannah Geines, so we know that somewhere in here some one became lazy and dropped the "e". About 1976 we located the graves for his grandparents and they were both spelled Geines. I have also put together some facts on Grandmother Taylor, the Philiberts, from articles Aunt Dolly has sent me.
But back to the Owens. You will notice I have returned the set on Wiley Catholic Owens with some corrections. However, I have also made copies for #7 Aunt Rosa, #8 Uncle Opal, #9 Aunt Lois, and for #2 Charles Wiley Owens second marriage which I forgot the first time. Daddy was married in March, died in November, and his son was born the following March. Pauline married again when their son was quite small to a Washington man, but his work was in Pittsburg, Pa. They then went there to live so we were practically strangers.
I have written to Charles and Jane asking for data but have received no answer. A neighbor friend looked at records at the court house for me for most I have on their second marriage. Names are from pictures.
I have also written to Aunt Goldie, Uncle Boots wife, but no answer. If I ever get that complete it will be quite long.
I'm enclosing some money. I'm sure it will not pay for your work but postal rates are certainly not cheap. Thank you again for what you have done for me and are doing.
    Always,
    Lorene Gines

P.S. I have had a copy of this set made for I wanted especially the note at the end. I understand that Ft. Wayne, Indiana has one of the best libraries and that is where our son lives. Hopefully we can go there and stay long enough that I can see what I can find. Herald usually doesn't want to stay because of work, gardening, etc.
If I get word from Aunt Goldie do you still want it? I'm not sure of what I
have down for #1 Uncle Boots. I've always known Aunt Goldie's mother as Mrs. Jagers but have been told her father's name was Tinker. I hope the grandchildren are in the right places.

Dear List; HELP!! (With a Great Big Please!)

I have been researching my GG Grandfather, William Thomas Taylor, b. Sept. 1,1841, d. June 29,1913.

I have all the information up to his birth date and depending on which source is correct, his State of birth.

Most entries indicate he was born in Tennessee, a couple of sources indicate Kentucky, (Horse Cave, Kentucky), and, at age 25, in the 1870 Census of Flat Creek Township #50, Stone Co., Missouri, he is listed as being born in Alabama.

He is buried at the Oakdale Cemetery in Monet, Missouri. He purchased land, (40 acres), in Southern Stone Co., Missouri from the McDonald Land And Mining Company, (a Corporation of Missouri), on Feb. 5,1916. That land was sold by his children after William Thomas Taylor's death. The sale of the 40 acres was concluded on August 11,1947. I have hit a brick wall concerning HIS PARENTS and HIS ANCESTRY. With the info. that I have shared about William Thomas Taylor in this e-mail, can anyone suggest any areas of research, ideas, resources, anything that might help me find out who his parents were?

He married Anna (Annie) Isabella Owens on Oct. 5,1865 in Potosi, Washington Co., Missouri.

Anna Isabella Owens, b. Oct. 29,1844, d. Jan. 28,1915. She was born in Washington Co., Missouri. She died in Monett, Missouri, but she was buried in the Owens Cemetery in Stone County, Missouri.

    ROOTWEB entry: (PART II)

I am very willing and intent on doing whatever it takes to get the research that I want for my families' history, most of all, for my Mother. We have been researching this together and she's so excited about the things we've learned so far.

We found our Taylor ancestors pictured and their histories written in the History Of Stone County Missouri, Volume 1 and Volume 2.

My hope and dream is to find this info. and break into the "old" family history and make my Mother happy. I am 50 years old now, Mom is still 39 & counting, of course. She has been the most wonderful, loving, PATIENT Mother to me that anyone could ever be fortunate enough to have. I love my Mother and I want to do this for her. We want to do this together.

    Thanks for any suggestions,

    Sincerely,
    Craig Taylor Richardson
