    Notes:

Washington Grove and his new wife Sarah Geines are found living next to her parents, Philip and Catharine Geines, in Lawrence County, IL in the 1850 census records.

Washington married GEINES Sarah on 25 Oct 1849 in Lawrence County, IL. Sarah (daughter of GEINES Philip and GUTTHATEL Catharine) was born on 6 Dec 1826 in PA; died in BET. 1900 - 1910 in Lawrence Co, IL. [Group Sheet]

Philip and Catharine Gines are found living next door to Sarah and Washington Grove on the 1850 census records. In the 1870 census records, Catharine has apparently died, but Philip is found living with Sarah and her husband and children. Generation: 3

  1. 4.  GROVE Daniel was born in ABT. 1773 in PA.

    Notes:

By the process of elimination, it would appear that the father of Washington Grove who was born in IL in 1821 (according to his census records) is Daniel Grove. He is the only Grove living in Lawrence Co, IL from 1816 on. There is one other Grove in the area (Michael) who is possibly the son of Daniel. Michael married Rebecca McCleave in 1926 in Lawrence County, Il and then moved away. Daniel Grove came to Lawrence Co, IL from PA in 1816, he had three children at the time: Michael, John and Elizabeth. Washington was born in IL.

From: History of Edwards, Lawrence and Wabash Counties, Illinois:

It can probably be safely assumed that Daniel Grove is from the Groff family that came from Switzerland due to religious persecution and settled in Lancaster Co, PA in the early 1700s. The Groffs and Landis families, and others, were Anabaptists in Switzerland and were forced to flee to Germany to survive. Many of these families chose to come to PA when William Penn opened it up to all religious groups. Daniel served on the first grand jury appointed in the county in Sept. 1825.

Daniel is found on the 1840 census records in Lawrence County, IL. He is listed as having 4 sons, one under 20 (Washington) and three between 20-30. There are 2 daughters, one under 20 and one between 20 and 30 (Elisabeth). Daniel's wife is still alive, between the ages of 60 and 70. They are living next to the McCleaves, the family that their possible son Michael married into.

Daniel is found on the 1830 census records in Lawrence Co, IL. He is listed as being between 50 and 60, with 4 sons, 2 between 5 and 10, one between 10 and 15, and one between 15 and 10. There are 3 daughters, between 5 and 20, and his wife.

Daniel is found on the 1820 census records for Edwards Co, IL (Lawrence Co broke away from Edwards Co.) He is listed as having 3 sons, 2 under 10 and one between 10-16, Daniel is listed as over 45 which means he was born before 1775. There are 2 daughters, both under 10 and Daniel's wife who is between 26-45.

Daniel married NN in ABT. 1800 in Pennsylvania. was born in ABT. 1780. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Henry Geines stated in the 1880 census records that he and both of his parents were born in PA. Henry and Catherine Gines are listed on 1850 Lawrence Co, Il census records, not far from Henry.
1850 Lawrence Co, IL census records:

Philip Geines, 65, farmer, 1,500 acres, born in PA
    Catharine, 55, born in PA
They are living next door to Washington Grove and his wife Sarah, Philip and Catharine's daughter, she was born in PA in 1827.

1860 census records, Philip and Catharine cannot be found.

1870 Lawrence Co, IL census records:

Philip Geines, 86 years old, born in PA. Philip is found living with Washington Grove, his wife Sarah and son Philip. There is a marriage record for Sarah Grimes to Washington Grove in Lawrence Co, IL in 1849. Philip must have taken his family from PA sometime in the late 1820's or early 1830's and then moved them to IL sometime before 1850.

The bible of Philip Geines has been found, it was owned by a descendant of Emma Jane Schmidt who married Adolph Weber. Emma was the daughter of Christian Schmidt and Christina Gines, and the bible, plus the bible for Christian Schmidt has been in the family all these years. It was discovered in December, 2003.
