    Flour and Corn Meal

Peter Pauley was always referred to as the "miller." He was shown as being in the Bell school district in 1870, but lived on the Middle Fork of the Black River perhaps in the area of John Miller's farm. When the people wanted flour, this is most likely the place they came to in the 1870 to 1900 period. Pauley married Lucinda Hawk December 5, 1872. His mill was badly damaged in the flood of 1892. he also had a barn to burn that was estimated to be worth about $600 about this same time causing him difficulty running his milling operation.

Peter served in the Civil War.

LOVE, John H. - Will dated 2 May 1871 After debts are paid and my wife (not named) has reserved her lawful interest in my estate, I then give to my five daughters, Sarah Catharine, Camelia Jane, Martha Almedia, Margaret Lucretia and Lucy Ellen, the undivided half of my real estate known as the Moses Carty farm lying in Iron Co. It would seem likely that the two grandaughters living with Lucinda were daughters of Frederick who cannot be found on any census records.

  1. 6.  HAWK Elijah was born in 1829 in Washington Co, MO (son of HAWK George and CLARK Anna); died in BET. 1880 - 1900 in Iron Co, MO.

    Notes:

Both Elijah and his younger brother Nelson bought property in Iron County while still living in Washington Co, MO., perhaps that section of Washington Co became Iron Co when it was formed in 1857. They lived next to each other for the rest of their lives, Nelson outliving Elijah by several years. They lived in a place which became known as Hawk's Lane in Iron County, and later on a school was built there which was called Hawk's school. Nelson contributed financially to the construction of the school.

Qualified Voters in Iron County 1864-1868

A list kept by Justice of the Peace Theodore P. Russell of loyal disloyal citizens in Iron County if the wake of the Civil War

Hawk, Aleja Democrat, Dent Twp. This is clearly Elijah Hawk. Almost everyone on the list was described as a Republican or rebel sympathizer, not many Democrats were seen.

Elijah married UNKNOWN Mary in ABT. 1855 in Iron/Washington County, MO. Mary was born in 1835 in Washington Co, MO; died in BET. 1863 - 1870 in Iron Co, MO. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  HAWK George was born in 1794 in VA; died in BET. 1860 - 1870 in Iron Co, Missouri.

    Notes:

George Hawk, married Anna clark, April 11, 1826, Washington County, MO

"Bellevue - Beautiful View: The History of the Bellevue Valley, and Surrounding Area" A book about the early years of Washington County, MO.

"Undoubtedly, a number of families arrived in this township during this twenty year period which we have little or no record of. John and Able Strickland moved to the east fork of the Black River during this time. George Hawk who was born in Virginia in ca. 1794 moved to the Lesterville vicinity then moved on Strother Creek where the community of Hawk Lane began.

Many of the Black River's first inhabitants came by way of Cumberland County, Kentucky which is an indication that stories told by the first people to arrive filtered back to Kentucky and influenced a number of people to come to the Black River Township.

We the descendants of these brave men and women should be very proud and thankful for the heritage that they left us. They overcame all the hardships and adversities common to frontier life to carve out of a wilderness a good life for us all."

1830 Census Record, Washington County, MO

George Hawk, 4 males, 2 under 5 years of age, one between 10 and 15 and one 30-40 (George), 3 females, 2 between 10 and 15 and one between 30-40 (Anna, his wife). One of the males should be his son Elijah, the other one may be Nelson but he was not supposed to have been born until 1831. The three children between 10-15 years of age are either George's from an earlier marriage, or perhaps siblings, or perhaps Anna's from an earlier marriage. George is living close to John and Able Strickland. Is this an indication they were friends and came west together?

A Solomon Hawk is found living close by in Washington County at this time. It would seem likely that this is an older brother of George.

Solomon Hawk 40-50 years of age (so slightly older than George)
    1 male, age 5-10, 2 males age 10-15
    2 daughters under 5
    1 daughter 5-10
    Wife, 30-40 years old

1840 Census Record, Washington County, Black River Twp., MO

George Hawk, 4 males, one between 5-10 (Nelson), 2 between (Elijah and someone else) 10-15, one between 40-50 (George), one female between 40-50 (Anna).

1850 Census Record, Washington Co, Harmony Twp., MO

George Hawk, 56 years old, born VA, Farmer, can read and write
Anny Hawk, 56, born in SC, can read and write
Elijah Hawk, 21 years old, born MO
Nelson Hawk, 18 years old, born MO

1860 Census Record, Iron County, Dent Twp., MO

George Hock, 66 years old, farmer, born in VA
Emma, 66 years old, born in SC

Neither George nor Annie are found on any more census records so one can assume they both died between 1860 and 1870.

There is a George Hawk listed in the 1820 census records for Franklin Co, IN, Blooming Grove. The number of children and ages of children and of George and his wife fit the later census records. On the earlier page is an Adam Hawk who is also about the same age as George. The interesting thing is that George Sumpter lives in the same county, and there is a close relationship between the Sumpters and the Hawks. The Sumpters were originally from Henry County, VA.

George married CLARK Anna on 11 Apr 1826 in Washington County, MO. Anna was born in 1794 in SC; died in BET. 1860 - 1870 in Iron Co, Missouri. [Group Sheet]
