In 1846, there was a crop failure in Schwennigen. The town people got together to deal with the issue of the poor people who were being supported by the town, they had established soup kitchens and aid to the poor. However, some of the poor asked permission to go to the US and the town council which had been formed to deal with the matter agreed. There was some dissent over the issue of "getting rid of the poor to save money" as some people saw it. However, it was agreed to 224 individuals would go from Germany to the US. An individual was hired to transport them, and they went from Germany to London as planned. However, the emigrants discovered that the captain did not plan on taking them to the US middle country as had been promised but to Canada. That is what was done with them, but then they were transported directly to Ohio rather than to NY which had been the original plan.
