Misc Stories from Wanda Lee (Brink) Gines ========================================= Grandpa (Charles F.) fixed the steeple on the Darmstadt Catholic Church. As a result of a tornado the steeple was twisted around and pushed to the side. He gave a bid to fix it and beat two St. Louis firms which were twice as much. He started one morning. People started coming at noon to watch. He had it all done except the brick work that needed put back. John Gewe did that. Grandpa moved and turned at right angles a 60' barn near New Minden, 1 1/2 m. south of hwy 161 and west of hwy 127 across the creek. Grandpa moved the Lutz House (2 or 3 girls and 2 boys) by the City Hall. It had to be moved only a short way. He put it on jacks and had cribbing under it and turned them over so it would move on the cribbing. Grandpa was in Washington state. He was going to walk to a mountain and walked all morning. He just wanted to take a walk after breakfast. He never got any closer and then found it was 75 miles away. Grandpa was walking in the woods along a road with a prospector in the mountains. Around a little curve, they suddenly came upon a bear. They ran as fast as they could in the direction from which they had come. When they got up enough nerve to turn around and look, the bear was running in the other direction.
